EBA Update

Fortnightly bargaining continues as we work through the APF’s comprehensive log of claims, ensuring that the voice of principal class employees remains central in shaping the next Victorian Government Schools Agreement. While we have reached in-principle agreement on some items, there are others that continue to require detailed, robust discussion. This is an expected and healthy part of the bargaining process, particularly when the stakes are high and the issues directly impact the sustainability and attractiveness of school leadership roles.

As members would appreciate, good faith bargaining obligations prevent the disclosure of specific details at this stage. However, I want to assure you that the APF negotiating team remains firmly focused on securing an agreement that reflects the true scope and weight of principal class work. We continue to advocate strongly for remuneration and conditions that recognise the unique leadership, accountability, and operational responsibility entrusted to school leaders.

The message we consistently reinforce is clear: principals are not teachers with added duties. The role is far more aligned with that of a Chief Executive Officer and one that carries significant operational oversight, strategic direction, financial accountability, staff management, and community leadership. This comes with a level of complexity unmatched in most other public sector roles.

Our aim is to ensure that the classification structure, salary progression, and conditions in the next agreement genuinely reflect this reality. Your lived experience, feedback, and professional insight continue to inform our approach at the table, and we thank members who have shared their views and expertise throughout the process.

We will continue to update members as soon as there is information we are permitted to share. In the meantime, please be assured that the APF remains unwavering in its commitment to securing a fair, future-focused agreement that strengthens the principalship and supports the wellbeing, sustainability, and professional standing of all school leaders.
