Physical Education

Welcome to Physical Education Term 3!
Prep-2
Our Prep to Year 2 students have been actively engaged in station-based learning activities designed to strengthen their fine motor, gross motor, and locomotor skills. These fun and purposeful stations allow students to rotate through a variety of movement tasks that support their physical development in age-appropriate and engaging ways.
Fine motor activities focus on strengthening hand and finger muscles—important for writing, cutting, and everyday classroom tasks—while gross motor and locomotor stations include running, jumping, hopping, and balancing exercises to build coordination, core strength, and spatial awareness. These foundational skills play a vital role in overall development and lay the groundwork for future learning across all areas of the curriculum.
Students are showing great enthusiasm and progress, and we are proud of the effort and energy they bring to each session!
3-6
This term, our Years 3 to 6 students will be focusing on developing their skills in both Newcombe Ball/Volleyball and Australian Rules Football (AFL). These sports not only promote physical fitness and coordination but also help build teamwork, communication, and strategic thinking.
In Volleyball and Newcombe, students will learn key techniques such as serving, passing, setting, and court positioning. These games are excellent for improving hand-eye coordination, reflexes, and collaborative play.
In AFL, students will work on skills like kicking, handballing, marking, and game tactics, while also learning about the rules and spirit of the game. Both sports will be taught in a supportive, skill-building environment where participation and effort are celebrated.
To support their learning, we encourage students to extend their interest outside of school by watching highlight videos or tutorials on YouTube and practising skills at home. Watching professionals play can help students better understand the flow of the game, techniques, and strategies.
We look forward to seeing our senior students grow in confidence and ability as they participate in these exciting sports this term!
Swimming
We are excited to announce that our annual Prep to Year 2 Swimming Program will commence on Monday, 1st September.
We’re pleased to share that there are enough places for every student to attend, and we strongly encourage all families to take up this valuable opportunity. Please confirm consent and payment on Compass to ensure your child attends. This much-loved program is an important part of our physical education curriculum, helping students build water confidence, learn essential swimming skills, and develop safety awareness around water.
To ensure your child can participate, please remember to complete the consent and payment via Compass as soon as possible. This helps us with final planning and ensures that all students are fully prepared for their sessions.
Swimming is not only a vital life skill but also a great way for young children to build confidence, resilience, and coordination in a fun, supportive environment. We look forward to seeing our youngest students thrive in the water!
If you have any questions or require assistance with Compass, please contact the school office.
Athletics Day
We also had a our 4-6 Athletics Day towards the end of last term. It was an amazing day filled with excitement and healthy competitive spirit. Well done to all students as they made it an amazing atmosphere to be a part of.
Interschool Sport
Term 2 was another successful season as all our sports did an amazing job of displaying the sunny spirit and school values through each of our matches. T-ball had a winning season, Newcombe didn't win a game but showed grit and determination throughout showing massive improvement from all players and AFL just missed out on districts by 1 match which was a heroic effort. Netball however, had an undefeated season making it to the district level competition of interschool sport. It was an incredible effort and the first team in my time at Sunshine Heights Primary to make it past the first round of competition. Congratulations again to the Netball girls team!
Sunshine Softball Association is hosting a T-Ball tournament from the 6th of August to the 10th. Details below.
