Book Week Parade - Important Costume Rules

St Mary's will be celebrating book week this year on Friday, August 15, with a dress-up parade and the annual Book Fair. As this is a holy day and we will all be attending mass in the morning, students will have to come to school in school uniformswith costumes either underneath uniforms or in bags to put over uniforms. They will get changed in classrooms so must have clothing underneath their uniform if getting changed out of it, as they will not have privacy. No students will be allowed to change in the bathrooms.

To accommodate mass it is also necessary that students come up with costumes that do not alter their face or hair in an unnatural way. There will be:

  • no hair spray/dyed hair (I suggest a wig instead)

  • no painted/fake nails

  • no facepaint/make up (I suggest a mask instead)

I understand this is an inconvenience but this is the best solution we can come up with to ensure that grandparents can be part of our Book Parade and Book Fair.

Book Week Fair

The Scholastic Book Fair will be open in the library on Friday 15 August at the times below,

to accommodate mass and the book week parade:

8.30am - 8.50am

10.15am - 11.30am

(11.30 - 12 Parade)

12pm - 2pm

There will be cash, card and prepayment options available. More information about prepaying will go home at the start of Week 4.

Premier's Reading Challenge Closing Sept

This is the last term to complete the Premier's Reading Challenge, which closes on Friday 19 September. Please complete reading records on the website prior to this date. Students who would like me to complete records for them need to speak to me during library time or during library lunch breaks BEFORE September so I can find time to go through the reading records with them. I am very happy to do this but it does take about 10 minutes per student.

NAIDOC Week in the Library

We celebrated NAIDOC Week in the library this week with a book display featuring some student artwork.

We also explored the theme through listening to the books "Walk with Us" by Adam Goodes in S2 and "Our Dreaming" by Kirli Saunders in ES1 and S1, while S3 students learnt about the incredible  songlines.

The S2 students reflected on the question: "How can we make sure that Country is looked after for future generations?" You can read some of their ideas on the brainstorms below. The ES1 and S1 students thought about the different strengths they possess and how they can use these to help their communities and build a brighter future for all as the next generation. You can read the S1 sharings below (Kindy shared verbally and discussed the different ways we can have strengths).

The S3 students reflected on the strength of First Nations cultures thriving over tens of thousands of years and what has been lost as cultural practices have been restricted on this land. They reflected on something that worries them when they think about the future of the land we all share, and their concerns as the next generation. You can read some of their personal reflections on the sticky note walls below.

Adventures of The Stroogle

The library has a long-established tradition of sending The Stroogle out on adventures with students who report back through a journal. Here is an entry from Lucy.
