Celebrating NAIDOC Week Through Science
In the lead up and during NAIDOC Week, students from Prep to Grade 6 engaged in hands-on Science learning experiences that celebrated and honoured First Nations knowledge, culture, and innovation.
Junior students explored traditional Indigenous toys and storytelling through play. They made dolls using natural materials, sparking conversations about connection to Country and the resourcefulness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. A highlight of the week was a visit from the wonderful Tom Howard, who captivated students with his didgeridoo performance. Tom not only shared music but also answered thoughtful student questions, helping us understand the cultural significance of this unique instrument.
Our senior students investigated the scientific and cultural importance of shell midden sites, ancient remnants that tell stories of how First Nations Australians have sustainably lived on this land for thousands of years. They examined real materials such as charcoal, kangaroo bones and shells, learning how these artefacts help us understand the past.
NAIDOC Week was a powerful opportunity for our whole school community to celebrate First Nations perspectives in Science, deepening our understanding of culture, history, and sustainable living practices that continue to shape this land.
