Year 5 Bake Sale for the Cancer Council

Monday 28 and Tuesday 29 July

Our 'Sharing the planet' unit of inquiry last term has inspired a group of Year 5 students to create a fundraising action plan. They will be making baked goods and selling these next week on Monday 28 and Tuesday 29 July (with teacher supervision) during first break. Money raised will be donated to the Cancer Council. Walpole students (Years 3-6) are invited to bring up to $3 on Monday and/or Tuesday to purchase these goods if they would like to do so.  All items will be individually wrapped and labelled with ingredients. Students with major dietaries will be closely monitored.

Year 3 - Excursion to UTAS and Long Beach

Wednesday 30 July

On Wednesday 30 July Year 3 will visit the Geology Department at the University of Tasmania and also Long Beach, Sandy Bay as part of their inquiry into Sharing the planet. Students will visit the Geology Department to gain an understanding of the geology of Tasmania. They will learn why the makeup of our island home is so special and worth preserving and protecting. We will learn how to identify rocks during an interactive gemstone hunt and explore the university's collection of rocks.  We will then travel to Long Beach, Sandy Bay where we will have lunch and play in the park before a lecturer from the university takes us to a volcanic site.

We will be departing school at 9.00am and returning from Long Beach at 2.00pm. Students will need to bring a packed lunch and drink bottle. Students will be in uniform and will need to bring a coat/rain jacket. Parents are welcome to meet us at Long Beach Sandy Bay during the lunch break and walk to the volcanic site and return. We will also need 4 volunteers for the University activities. Please contact your child’s classroom teacher if you’re able to assist on this day. Anyone interested in joining us will need to complete a Volunteer Registration Form.

Japanese Cultural Day

Friday 1 August

On Friday 1 August we will be celebrating our annual Japanese Cultural Day. This year our focus is the concept of Omoiyari - thinking of others - and what actions, big or small, we can take in thinking of others. Families are invited to join us in The Farrall Centre for a brief assembly commencing at 9.10am before students divide into groups for the morning's activities. The canteen will have available an additional variety of sushi and other Japanese foods for the day which can be ordered online via Flexischools

Orders for these items open on Monday 28 July and need to be placed by Wednesday 30 July to enable the canteen sufficient time to cater appropriately. Alternatively, please do not hesitate to make Onigiri or Sushi rolls for your child to bring on the day.

Year 5 Excursion - The Hobart Convict Penitentiary

Tuesday 5 August

On Tuesday 5 August Year 5 will go on an excursion to The Hobart Convict Penitentiary. This excursion is part of our ‘Where we are in place and time’ inquiry and aims to provide students with a valuable experience of learning about perspective, bias, empathy, and the importance of understanding our history. We will be leaving school at 9.15am and walking to the Hobart Convict Penitentiary on the corner of Campbell and Brisbane Streets. Students will participate in a guided tour including the site of the Penitentiary as it was in 1821, the Solitary Confinement cells under the pews in the Chapel, the Penitentiary Chapel construction commenced in 1831, the underground tunnels convict-built in 1860, the clock tower entrance including the Church bell and the 1860 conversion to the Supreme Criminal Court. We will not be viewing the 23 minute film Pandemonium as this is recommended for secondary classes only. At 12.00pm we will walk to Soundy Park for break time before we walk back to school, returning by 1.30pm.

Please ensure your child arrives at school on time so that we can depart promptly by 9.15am. Students require a packed lunch, drink bottle and snacks and should wear their sports uniform and comfortable walking shoes. Additionally, please pack a waterproof jacket in case of rain. The Hobart Convict Penitentiary is a safe and welcoming environment for our students to engage in valuable learning experiences. We would also welcome two parent volunteers to join us for the day. If you are interested please let your child’s teacher know.

Prep Excursion - Linear Park, Lenah Valley

Wednesday 6 August

On Wednesday 6 August, Prep classes will visit the Labyrinth at Linear Park for a transdisciplinary learning experience, centred around Earthcare and Mathematics. We will be looking for provocations in the environment and engaging in open-ended mathematical activities - ‘Muddy Maths’! We will leave school by bus at 11.50am and return to school by 2.00pm. Children will be required to wear appropriate and sturdy shoes/gumboots. Due to the nature of the activities we would suggest children wear warm layers under their uniforms. They will need to bring a change of clothes, as well as a warm coat/rain jacket. We will be eating afternoon tea at the site, so no second break lunch orders on this day please, as we will be unable to collect them before we go.  Please ensure that students have ample water to drink too. Note that we do not require parent help for this excursion.

Year 2 Outdoor Education Excursion - Waterworks Reserve

Friday 8 August

On Friday 8 August, Year 2 will be heading to Waterworks Reserve by bus with their class teachers and Outdoor Education Teacher, Emily Ardas. Students will be exploring animal adaptations, primarily through the study of animal scatt. We will be departing at 9.15am returning back to school by 3.00pm. Students should wear sports uniforms on this day, but will need to bring a warm jumper or coat/jacket, beanie, gloves and a waterproof raincoat as it could be very cold. As we will be away from school for most of the day, students will need to bring a large packed lunch (no lunch orders), snacks and a drink from home.  Please update student Operoo profiles before the excursion.

Absentees

If your child will be absent from school for the day please advise the Primary School Office (phone: 6210 2228, or email: primaryschooloffice@friends.tas.edu.au ) and the classroom teacher before 8.45am. We appreciate your support in this process.
