CURRICULUM FOCUS

This week in Mathematics, Grade 2 is creating additive patterns.

VOCABULARY

An additive pattern is a number pattern where you keep adding or taking away the same number each time to find the next number.

For example:

If you add 2 each time, the pattern looks like this:

2, 4, 6, 8, 10...

You are adding 2 to each number to find the next one.

If you take away 1 each time, the pattern looks like this:

10, 9, 8, 7, 6...

You are subtracting 1 each time to find the next number.

By following these patterns, you can see how numbers change in a regular way

ACTIVITIES YOU CAN DO AT HOME TO SUPPORT YOUR CHILD'S LEARNING

Choose a Number: Pick a number between 1 and 10 to start your pattern.

Add or Subtract: Choose whether you want to add or subtract each time. Decide how much to add or subtract (it could be 1, 2, or 3).

Write the Pattern: Write down your pattern by adding or subtracting that number to each new number.

For example:

If you start with 3 and add 2, your pattern will be:

3, 5, 7, 9, 11…

Show Your Family: Share your pattern with someone at home and see if they can guess what you’re adding or subtracting each time!

Bonus: Try making a different pattern by starting with a new number or changing how much you add or subtract!
