Year 2 News

From Emma and the Year 2 teaching team

As we come to the end of another busy and exciting term we want to reflect on some of the incredible things we’ve been learning.

Life in the Ice Age and Natural Disasters

In Literacy, we’ve been exploring some fascinating topics. First, we journeyed back in time to the Ice Age, discovering what life was like for the animals and humans that lived during that chilly period. Did you know that we are currently in an Ice Age right now? Through visualising and summarising, students enjoyed learning about woolly mammoths and how early humans adapted to the harsh environment.

Next, we explored Natural Disasters! From earthquakes to volcanoes and tsunamis, we discussed how these events happen and the impact they have on the world around us. Everyone has been fascinated learning about tectonic plates and the Ring of Fire. Our students were eager to share their thoughts and ideas in both their writing and discussions.

Mapping

In Numeracy, we've been sharpening our mapping skills. We learned all about location and mapping, practising how to read maps and identify different places. We focused on using directional language such as above, below, and next to, as well as half and quarter turns. Students learned how to play Battleship using coordinates and had a chance to make their own maps. Over the past fortnight, students have been conducting a variety of chance experiments. It has been a lot of fun making predictions, conducting experiments, and drawing conclusions based on the data.

We’re so proud of the hard work our students have put in this term and wish them a well-deserved break! We wish everyone a safe and relaxing holiday!
