Dr Andrew Butt, Program Leader - Co-curricular Arts

As Term 3 draws to a close we celebrate with our Grandparents Day concert and Soiree where well over 1,000 people will be in attendance over the two concerts. Prior to this, our Year 7 students present the world premiere of their new short film, 'The Exam’. Looking forward to Term 4, MCA will be hosting several events for the 2024 Brisbane International Jazz Festival as well as several other highlights, including drama presentations and studio concerts.

 

Year 7 Drama Screening of Short Film

Wednesday 11 September, 5:00pm | Experimental Theatre

Join the Year 7 drama boys as they present the world premiere of their new short film, 'The Exam’. It’s exam block and the dreaded maths exam is upon them. Everyone went in thinking they didn't have to study. The exam is ridiculously hard. How will they pass and why do strange things keep happening? Is it possible to pass a Maths test using a D&D dice, a giant eraser and a band-aid?

 

Grandparents Day

Grandparents of the Marist College Ashgrove community will be entertained with a morning concert that showcases a selection of the College’s premier ensembles.

Soiree

All members of the College community are invited to this annual gala event to farewell our 2024 Year 12 students. This celebratory concert will feature all of the College’s large and small ensembles. Food and drinks will be available to purchase.

Theatre ASH performance - “12 Incompetent Jurors

Thursday 10 October, 6:30pm | Draney Theatre

A man stands accused of stealing cats. Many cats. There is video evidence. There are witness statements. The man even admitted it. So why are the jurors taking so long to agree on a verdict? He’s guilty! Or is he…Theatre Ash presents the comedy, 12 Incompetent Jurors. Written in imitation of the famous play, Twelve Angry Men, the play offers a lot of laughs, a lot of confusion and a lot of irritating people!

Brisbane International Jazz Festival (BIJF)

2024 heralds the 10th year of the BIJF, bringing world-acclaimed artists to Brisbane. This year MCA will co-host workshops and an exciting world premier concert in our very own Experimental Theatre.

 

Tin Men and the Telephone Lunchtime Concert

Friday 18 October, 1:50pm | Experimental Theatre

This concert will feature the Dutch Trio “Tin Men and the Telephone” who are visiting as part of the 2024 BIJF. The group will present an immersive multimedia performance. This free concert is open to all members of the College Community.

 

BIJF and MCA Presents Andrew Butt Trio +

(Album Launch | Peregian) and Vanderbyl

Saturday 19 October, 2:00pm - 4:00pm | Experimental Theatre

This concert will feature current MCA staff as well as the 2022 Old Boys. Tickets will be limited so book early to avoid disappointment.

 

Peregian is the third album of Brisbane-based saxophonist, Andrew Butt. The Queensland Music Award-winning album is inspired by themes that come out of everyday experiences, friendships, travels, and love. Andrew has been prominent on the Australian music scene for over 25 years, being a multiple winner of the Queensland Music Awards. Other accolades include a Churchill Fellowship and performing as a soloist with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra.

 

Born and raised in the western suburbs of Brisbane/Meanjin, Vanderbyl is a four-piece jazz fusion band that draws influence from contemporary world jazz and Australian psychedelic rock. The band will be playing music from their debut vinyl release Vanderbyl.
