Boarding News

Mr Jim Noble, Assistant Head of College - Boarding

Dear Boarding Families,

Exams have come to an end and we are closing in on the final day of term. It has been a particularly busy 10 weeks at Marist and many of the boarders have been heavily committed across academic, sports, music and community service areas. They have certainly earned a good holiday!

Last Saturday, it was great to watch many of our boarders play rugby league on the main oval, as well as those boys playing the final round of basketball and tennis. A strong co-curricular offering really complements our boarding program by keeping the boys busy. Involvement in team sports and activities helps build character by teaching the boys to put the team before themselves. They also learn to respect their opponents and the officials, how to lose, how to win and so much more. I commend all the boarders who committed to a sporting team or to an extra-curricular club or activity this term.

We also finished up with another very busy weekend of boarding recreation activities, highlighted by the annual ‘Night on the Green’ where we hosted the Stuartholme boarders under the stars on McMahon Oval on Friday night. This event proved to be a great success again with many musical performances and it was a lovely social occasion for boarders of both schools. We also had an ice skating trip with the other boarding schools, a paintball trip for our Year 12 boarders, a cool-down swim in the pool, a beach trip to Mooloolaba and the weekend concluded with a shared Boarders Mass and dinner at Stuartholme on Sunday evening. Our boys are so lucky to have these fantastic activities to look forward to each weekend and I’d like to acknowledge Blair Whitlock who coordinates boarders recreation for all that he does in this area.

A reminder to all families that the boys are back in summer school uniform next term, so please ensure your son packs appropriately when coming back for Term 4. Can I also remind you to check that your son has all his clothing items clearly labelled to assist Les and Kim in the School Laundry with their sorting.

I hope all families are able to enjoy some quality time together in the upcoming two weeks before the boys return for a fast and full-on Term 4. I look forward to catching up with parents and guardians when you are picking up this week or dropping back on Monday 30 September.

Night on the Green

Boarding Recreation

Mr Blair Whitlock - Boarding Recreation Officer

Friday night saw the annual Boarders Night on the Green which is always a special event on the Term 3 calendar. The Year 11 and 12 boarders from Stuartholme joined our boys for a great evening celebrating the musical talent in both boarding houses. Well done to our MCs (Marley Chan and Xavier Simms), performers (George Bell, Kyran Bryant, Dom Forbes, Max James, Hunter Harvey, Kalan Schnaubelt, George Philp and Wylie Gordon) and the many others who got up during the open mic and gave it a crack! A big thank you must go to our amazing tech team led by Jack Johnson who put together an amazing stage and ran the evening impeccably for all our boarders.

Saturday was a big day as Marist hosted the Rugby League fixtures for the final round of AIC sport. It was a special day for many of our Year 12 boarders playing their final matches in the Ashgrove colours – well done on all your achievements and commitment to the Marist program over the years. It was a hot day and we headed down to the pool for an hour before most of the La Valla boarders headed out to Boondall for an ice skating session in the evening. Bambi on Ice was brought to life through multiple different renditions with Oscar Walker being particularly accurate. As the boys' confidence levels rose the fence hugging and penguins were cast aside as they whipped around the rink. Ice skating is always a favourite on the calendar and we look forward to returning in Term 4.

Sunday was a stunning day for a beach trip as our La Valla, Montagne, Hermitage and many Years 10 and 11 boys headed up to Mooloolaba. With the weather warming up, there will be plenty more beach trips to come in Term 4. Meanwhile, our Year 12 boys headed out to Valhalla in Rosewood for a paintball day. It was a reward for all the fantastic work our seniors have done throughout the year in boarding and they certainly made the most of it. Br Terence Senior Supervisor, Mr Winchester, had a particularly large target on his back as the boys went to work. It was a great afternoon with Hugo Tully, Xavier Simms, Dom Forbes and Luca Martinuzzi's fearless attitudes leading their teams and taking a few choice welts home with them! It has been another busy term in recreation and we look forward to getting back underway when Term 4 starts.
