Sport: Year 8 Volleyball

Boys Squad Runner-Up at Upper Hume in Wodonga

Was another big day of Interschool Sport yesterday with 18 of our highly talented Year 8s competing in the Upper Hume Volleyball tournament at the Wodonga Sports & Leisure Centre.

Our Boys finished top of their pool, beating the usual Sport juggernaut Catholic College Wodonga (3 sets to 1), and Wodonga Middle Years College (3-0) to make the Final againstVictory Lutheran College, who were Top 8 in the State in 2023.

In the Final, the 1st two sets went down to the wire (18-20, 18-20) before Victory closed it out in the 3rd set, leaving our boys Upper Hume Runners-Up but, it's reasonable to say, just a matter of points aways from being State Finals standard.

A number of staff from other schools complimented our boys on their skills and game play - and this after just just a week of training at breaks. We believe that in future, especially once the Wangaratta WSAC Courts are completed and the local Volleyball league is brought back giving our kids more experience (like the Wodonga kids have access to), we could have some State-level Volleyball teams in our midst again.

We had 16 boys try out for the team over 2 days in our Sport Centre, and such as is our depth at that age group, we could have fielded a 2nd team that would have been competitive as well.

BEST BOYS - Clarence Lampa, Zach Wills, Leo Woodburne, Hugh Spring.

The Girls played well also, winning two of their 8 sets across the day, with many of the losing sets close encounters.

BEST GIRLS - Kaity Ford, Taylah Wyatt.

Thanks to all of our players for another excellent display in the Sporting arena.

Special thank you to coaches Sandy "Newmo" Newman and Ash Clayton.

We look forward to reporting on the Year 7 and 8 Tennis this Friday at the Merriwa Park Lawn Tennis Club.
