SENIOR ENSEMBLES CONCERT
On the evening of Wednesday 28 May, the McKinnon Secondary College community saw an amazing showcase of musical talent by some of our school’s best musicians. The Senior Ensembles Concert began with three musical items performed by the Wind Symphony, with a focus on Australian composers. Following the impressive performance, the Senior Percussion Ensemble performed a lively piece featuring a xylophone solo by Josh Golembo (Year 11); undeniably a highlight of the evening. Afterwards, the McKinnon Choir and Senior Singers took the stage, performing a number of moving pieces. Next came the Orchestra and then the Senior Strings, before a powerful finale by the Senior Stage Band.
The Senior Ensembles Concert has been an annual highlight for me during the past two years being involved in Orchestra and has been a great way to enjoy performing music to the high standard of McKinnon Secondary College. For anyone who is considering beginning to learn an instrument, I strongly encourage you to take the first step and join the McKinnon music program.
I would like to express our gratitude to the members of staff and the McKinnon community who make events like this possible - notably, the ensemble directors and conductors, music teachers, and the people working behind the scenes to ensure these amazing events run flawlessly.

VCE THEATRE STUDIES EXCURSION
On Tuesday 3 June the VCE Units 2 and 3 Theatre Studies students headed into the city to see The Birds at The Malthouse Theatre. After studying and looking at the creation of the story from the 1950s, students viewed an adapted version with the added experience of wearing headphones to increase the immersive experience. It was an enjoyable learning opportunity for all and provided further insight into the possibilities in live theatre.

YEAR 11 MUSIC NIGHT
On Wednesday 4 June, the Year 11 Music Night was held in the Theatre. Students from the Unit 1 VCE Music class performed selections of their programs to a live audience. The Theatre was abuzz with anticipation as the lights dimmed and the performances began. Our performers dazzled the crowd with a mix of group and solo works, from a wide variety of musical styles.
The works performed have been prepared by the students over the course of the semester, and it was wonderful to see them showcase all their hard work and talent. We were lucky to have students not enrolled in VCE music put up their hand to accompany assessed students, a fantastic display of our school values.
A big thank you to Ms West who accompanied many students on the night, as well as Mr Albanis and Mr Serebrianik who were a tremendous help backstage. Thank you also to the instrumental teachers of this cohort, who work tirelessly with these students to get them performance ready. Thank you also to the MAV team who helped things run smoothly and made everyone sound fantastic. Stay tuned for the next one!
