WHAT’S HAPPENING IN ICT?
This term our Year 7 ICT students have been working on their research projects in the lead up to cultural diversity week. This project involves students researching the story of a person (either themselves, a family member or a famous person) who has migrated to Australia from another country. Students will need to spend time researching the countries their chosen individual originally came from, and discuss aspects about that country such as food, culture, history, music, geography, education, sports and many more! Once that is done students will make comparisons between Australia and their chosen person’s original country highlighting key similarities and differences.
Once the research has been completed, students will then have the opportunity to create a Google Site to showcase their research in a fun and interactive way. The Year 7 students will learn to present their own original content, along with pieces of media they have either found or provided themselves.
At the end of this project students will have an opportunity to share and showcase their Google sites with their classmates in a classroom gallery walk. The Year 7 students will have an opportunity to learn about the different cultural backgrounds in the wider McKinnon school community while also learning key research and web design skills.

Some ICT students have kindly shared their experiences below:
In this unit we have been working on a research project where we pick either a relative or a famous person that moved to Australia and interview them about their experience moving and what challenges they might have faced. I interviewed my grandma who moved from Turkey. I like this unit because we get to learn more about our culture and other people’s culture and we develop our website skills, research skills and how to cite our sources.
Isla O’Ryan, Year 7
Year 7 ICT has brought a plethora of excellent assignments and projects, but the project currently underway is the “Research Project”. This project focuses on the backbone of any task: Research. Students have been asked about their heritage, family history, migration stories and even diving deeper into the countries people and their relatives come from.
Students have written about their subject relatives' stories as a migrant, which has made for some high-octane accounts. Students have also written about the history of their target countries. Every research project is full of rich history and compelling stories, polar differences and accurate, concise bibliographies. Passion and time have been poured into these projects and it shows! In summation the Year 7 Research Projects leave very little to be desired, right now is the peak of ICT projects.
