Around the Classrooms

1/2W

In our classroom we love learning in Maths!

Each day we start our learning in Maths by completing one of our four Maths activities. We work in small groups or with a partner to practise and consolidate our understanding of topics taught. Our activities this week include Concept Circles(see photos below), Ordering Numbers(Ipad),Skip Counting and a Partitioning 10/20 game.

As soon as we pack up our activities we collect our whiteboard from our tub and sit on the floor with our whiteboard ready in our lap.  As a class we join in and complete our Maths Review Slides. We are able to review Maths topics taught so far to consolidate our understanding. We follow our whiteboard protocols at this time. We even had Miss Levett (Numeracy Leader) come into our classroom so that we could show her how amazing we are!

So far this year we have been learning about Data and Place Value. In Data we used tally marks to ask a question and record the responses on a table. Using this data we then created vertical and horizontal picture graphs. We asked questions like ‘What is your favourite fruit/colour?’  When our graph was completed we answered questions to show that we understood what was the most popular or least popular data.

In Place Value we were exploring numbers and how we can represent them using bundling sticks to represent hundreds, tens and ones. We compared numbers to see which one had the smallest and largest value.  We also partitioned numbers into different parts eg. 34= 3 tens and 4 ones or 267=200+60+7. Lastly, we ordered numbers accurately using our knowledge of place value to order them from smallest to biggest.

We can’t wait to learn even more in Maths this year!
