Neurodiveristy Week in Prep A
with Miss Bianca Campli
Last week was Neurodiversity Celebration Week, a worldwide initiative that challenges stereotypes and misconceptions about neurological differences.
Just as it’s important to talk to children about how people and families come in all sorts of shapes and sizes and colours, it’s also important to let them know that people can think and feel in different ways too.
The more children know about the differences between us, the more they can come to understand and accept other children and adults who aren’t like them!
The preps spent last week listening to stories that celebrate our identity and expand our awareness of diversity.
“Smart is not just ticks and crosses, smart is building boats from boxes. Painting patterns, wheeling wagons, being mermaids, riding dragons…”
“Whoever we are, whatever we do, however we think, we know this is true: That we are all people, some big and some small, sharing a world big enough for us all.”
This book is great for introducing our writing prompt (“The best part of me is…”) and we had an empowering conversation surrounding loving our bodies for everything that they are, flaws and all, because they come with a lot of beauty and strength.
We focused on the importance of our bodies and discussed why we love certain features about ourselves. We created a love heart craft to symbolise our favourite part of us. We used tissue paper and ripped it into tiny pieces before scrunching it and glueing it down. This was a craft that required patience and optimism and the preps sure enjoyed it!
We were inspired by the 'best part of me' story and capured black and white photos of us.
Have a moment to stop and think about what the best part of you is and why?
