Monican conduct on Public Transport

Students at St Monica’s College, Epping are reminded of the expectation to represent yourselves, your family and your College, in an appropriate manner at all times. This is a timely notice following the term break, that your conduct and behaviour whilst at the College and during your commute to and from school, is to be of the highest standard.

A great number of Monicans travel on public transport daily and are commended for the manner in which they do so. This is tremendously important to uphold for your own safety and for the protection and comfort of other users. Victoria Police work closely with Public Transport Victoria and other transport service operators to ensure the safety of all commuters.

As we are aware, Protective Services Officers (PSOs) patrol the public transport network and are often a welcomed presence at train stations, on trains and larger bus interchanges offering a sense of security and care. Patrols are also conducted in some surrounding areas of transportation hubs for everyone’s safety. It is important for all Monicans to know that PSOs are authorised to request a person’s name and address, arrest or detain if deemed necessary, search people and property, seize items (weapons, implements used for destruction of property, alcohol, etc). PSOs are authorised to issue infringement notices and to motion directions to “move on” from an area if they deem this to be required. PSOs are supported by Victoria Police officers who will at times conduct targeted patrols. The presence of PSOs and Victoria Police is encouraging in highly populated zones as it can detect, prevent or manage anti-social behaviours that may potentially place you at risk.

Your safety is paramount to your family and to those of us at your school. Remember this as you use public transport, whether it be during your school commute or as you use services during the weekend or holiday periods. Be sure to exercise caution and situational awareness by understanding your surroundings. Demonstrate respect, which includes the use of acceptable language and use your manners. Equally important is to ensure to seek assistance if you are feeling unsafe or uncomfortable, due to the actions of others. Report unacceptable conduct as this can prevent someone else experiencing this too.

Monicans are directed to behave appropriately at all times and to remove themselves from any potential risks which may include the inappropriate actions of others. It is strongly recommended that you comply with the instructions of those charged with the authority to keep you and all members of the public safe.
