Year 7-9 - Coaching Parade Campus

Year 7-9 Update

We would like to congratulate our students on a positive, engaging, and educational Term One. We are incredibly proud of their hard work, dedication, and enthusiasm across all subject areas.

This term has been filled with exciting events across the school. Last week, our Year 8/9 band held their first lunchtime concert, performing to a packed music room and showcasing their incredible talent.

We also enjoyed a delicious lunchtime BBQ, hosted by Homestead Senior Secondary's VCE VM class, who served up a range of tasty BBQ treats for students and staff to enjoy.

Year 7 Camp

Year 7 Camp is fast approaching, and our students are eagerly preparing for this exciting experience. A student packing list was sent home in the last week of term with important information on what to bring and what to leave at home. For more information on the activities and camp information, please visit https://www.pgladventurecamps.com.au/pgl-activities/. We look forward to a fantastic camp filled with adventure, learning, and team-building!

Curriculum Highlights

Mathematics

Year 7

Throughout Term One, students have engaged in a range of mathematical concepts, with a particular focus on Number and Probability.

In Number, students explored the order of operations and deepened their understanding of fractions. They identified equivalent fractions, simplified expressions, calculated fractions of a quantity, and converted between fractions, decimals, and percentages.

More recently, the focus has shifted to Probability, where students have applied their prior knowledge to a hands-on chance project involving the different colours found in a packet of Skittles. Through this project, they have explored key concepts such as sample space, theoretical and experimental probability, and extended their thinking to complementary events, even exploring two-step chance experiments.

Students have represented and interpreted their findings in various ways, not only enhancing their understanding of probability but also developing their proficiency with digital tools.

It has been a fantastic term of mathematical exploration, and we look forward to seeing students continue to build on these skills in the coming months.

Year 8

This term, Year 8 students have delved into two fundamental areas of Mathematics; ‘Number’ and ‘Measurement’. In the Number unit, students began by focusing on computation with integers. They learned how to perform arithmetic operations with positive and negative numbers.

In the Measurement unit, Year 8 students explored the world of shapes and their properties. They learnt how to calculate area and perimeter of two-dimensional shapes and how to calculate volume and capacity of three-dimensional shapes.

Overall, this term's exploration of Number and Measurement has provided Year 8 students with a strong foundation in essential Mathematical concepts. The skills learned in these topics will not only serve them in future math courses but also equip them with problem-solving abilities that are useful in daily life.

Year 9

The Year 9 students kicked off the academic year with an in-depth study of decimals. They developed a solid understanding of significant figures, recognising that the first non-zero digit from the left is the first significant number. With this foundation, they confidently rounded decimals to the appropriate number of significant figures, sharpening their accuracy in mathematical calculations.

Next, we delved into the world of rational and irrational numbers. Students successfully distinguished between the two categories and applied this knowledge to express numbers in scientific notation. This skill will serve them well in various areas of mathematics and science.

Our geometry unit was equally engaging. Students explored the relationships between supplementary and complementary angles and applied their learning to tackle challenges involving the exterior angles of triangles. This foundation seamlessly led us into the study of congruency, where students analyzed different types of triangles and identified the key rules for proving congruence between two triangles.

With such a strong start, we are excited to see how the Year 9 students continue to build on their mathematical skills throughout the year!

Wood Technology

Year 7

During this term, Year 7 students worked on a design brief for a model aeroplane as a study desktop ornament. Students used their digital portfolios on Google classrooms to develop and document the production process using IB design cycle guidelines. Students used both hand and power tools and focused on accurately measuring, marking and cutting skills in the manufacturing process.

Year 8

Year 8 students completed a storage/pencil case projects in Term One of Semester One. Students were given a single length of timber to measure, mark, cut and assemble their products using hand tools, power tools and joinery techniques. Students followed basic construction techniques to develop their skills with a focus on safety to produce their pencil case. They documented the process in a digital portfolio using the IB MYP design cycle in Google classrooms.

Year 9

Year 9 students completed their handy carry caddy project. These caddies are used to cart around and safely store items such as cleaning products or even shoe polish and brushes. Students worked on their projects both individually and in pairs to construct their carry caddy. They followed guided instruction as well as demonstration models to construct their product using both hand tools, power tools and complex machinery. Students used joinery techniques to build their caddy and documented the process in a digital portfolio based on the IB MYP Design process on Google classrooms.
