Year Five

To all families of our Year Five Students,

We'd like to extend our thanks for all the support you've given to your children throughout the term. We hope they've all fostered a sense of belonging within their class and feel like an important part of our big community. Term Two is upon us, so we hope you all find some quality family time together over the two week break and look forward to seeing the students return with eagerness.

Literacy

The Year Five Students have been busy developing their literacy skills in both reading and writing. We have been building upon our knowledge of a range of topics, using the 'Structure of Observed Learning Outcomes' framework (SOLO Taxonomy). This framework for learning encourages students to strive for a greater level of understanding, no matter how well informed they are of the topic. We hope all students develop a want to always know more about what they're exposed to. In writing, the students have been developing their informative writing and research skills by engaging with various text types. We've read news articles, watched informative videos and found suitable internet articles to support our inquiry.

Inquiry

Additionally, throughout our Unit of Inquiry, our students have been exploring global leaders, reading about their impact, and discussing the qualities that make them influential figures in history and society. They enjoyed taking on the perspective of news reporters and journalists by engaging in research of a particular leader. Students formed their own questions that they would ask these leaders as if they were interviewing them, and then presented their findings in a news reporting format in front of the class or filmed it and presented it. We wanted the students to express their new learnings of their leader through a literacy lens, by creating a comic that represented either a day in their lives or a short timeline of their milestones.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, our students have been learning about measurement and geometry, specifically 'space'. In space, they learned about symmetrical shapes, translations (flips, slides and turns), and co-ordinates on a plane (x,y). This was a complicated unit, as it tested our spatial reasoning and visual sense. They also revised their current understandings of decimal numbers and learned further about the role 0 plays in whole and decimal numbers. For example, 0 in 4.09 makes the number smaller than 4.90, as students understand there are 9 tenths in the number which is a larger value compared to 9 hundredths.
