Year Four

Dear Year 4 Families,

Welcome to the last week of Term One. Please find our week 10 newsletter.

Mathematics

Year 4 students extended their knowledge about  decimal numbers. They learnt renaming decimal numbers in multiple ways and explained their reasoning using different representations such as fraction notation expanded form, grids and number lines. Students were given opportunities to apply their understanding of decimals to real-life problems such as measurement and money. They explored hands on experiences to create models using strips and sorting money.

Writing

In Writing, students have been creating poems about the person they admire. In this process they have been learning to describe an object’s texture and using the sensory details. They have been experimenting using different figurative languages such as metaphors, similes, repetition and personification. Such learning experiences are important for students as it enhances their language skills, creativity, and emotional intelligence. Poetry introduces rich vocabulary, rhythm, and sentence structures further improving their reading, writing, and speaking abilities.

In Writer's Workshop, the focus was the use of strong verbs in writing to make it more vivid, precise, and engaging. Students wrote writing pieces of their choice following the writing process and understood the importance of strong verbs in a text.

Reading

In Reading, Year 4 focused on inferencing. Students used their inferencing skills is to read the text between the lines. Students made predictions and connections using a range of images. They used various strategies to determine the overall message in images, poems and the given texts.

Inquiry

In our current Unit of Inquiry, students explored the central idea: "Who we choose to admire reflects our beliefs and values." They selected a person they admire and investigated their life, actions, and impact on the world. Through this process, students identified the values and beliefs that shaped their chosen individual’s decisions and legacy, and reflected on how these align with their own values and beliefs. This task also provided an opportunity to strengthen their independent research skills, including note-taking, as they gathered, sorted, and organised information to prepare for presenting their findings in a meaningful way.

House Colour Week

Each year level took part in competitive activities to earn House Points and build school spirit! Year 4 students participated in a game of Rob the Nest, where they demonstrated teamwork, strategy, and determination to achieve a common goal.
