Year Three

Dear Year Three Parents and Guardians,

As we continue our journey through Term 1, we are excited to share the fantastic learning experiences taking place in our classrooms. Below, you will find updates on the key subject areas and ways to support your child’s learning at home.

Reading

Children have been building on the skill of making inferences. Making inferences is the ability to use clues from the text and prior knowledge to draw conclusions about what is not explicitly stated. This skill helps students develop a deeper understanding of texts. Students have been practising this by engaging in whole-class and independent tasks, including reading passages and answering inference-based questions, as well as analysing photographs to determine what is observed, wondered, and inferred. Inferencing enhances comprehension by allowing readers to make logical connections and predict outcomes. At home, you can support your child’s ability to infer by listening to them read and asking implicit questions about the text, such as, “Why do you think the character made that choice?” or “What do you think will happen next and why?”

Writing

Students are expanding beyond opinion pieces and are now exploring various types of persuasive texts, such as magazine articles, travel pamphlets, and posters. Classes are following the gradual release of responsibility model to develop their persuasive writing skills. Some students have written persuasive letters to a friend, convincing them to travel to their preferred destination. This unit helps students strengthen their ability to present logical arguments, use persuasive language, and structure their writing effectively.

Mathematics

Students have been exploring odd and even numbers. Now that NAPLAN has concluded, we have reintroduced the Launch, Explore, Discuss (LED) model. This approach encourages students to engage deeply with mathematical concepts through hands-on problem-solving and collaboration. We look forward to seeing their problem-solving skills, teamwork, and metacognitive thinking continue to develop through this process.

Inquiry

As we near the end of the inquiry cycle for our first unit, students have been making deeper connections and beginning to take action. We have enjoyed observing the different styles of engagement throughout this unit, as some students have chosen to explore topics related to culture, beliefs, and values. It has been wonderful to see their curiosity and enthusiasm in learning about the world around them.

Thank you for your continued support in your child’s learning journey. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or would like more information about our classroom activities.

Important Reminders

Hat and Hydration Policy:

  • Bring and wear their wide brim hat at every break time

  • Carry a full water bottle to school each day to stay hydrated

Technology and Preparation:

  • Please ensure iPads are fully charged before bringing them to school

  • Students should arrive prepared and ready to learn

Additionally, our school day begins at 8:30am, with classroom doors opening at 8:20am. This early access allows students time to settle in and prepare for their learning. This is a crucial time of the day that prepares students for a successful and engaging day.

If a student arrives after 8:40am, they must sign in at the school office and obtain a late pass. This helps us maintain accurate attendance records and minimise classroom disruption.

Kind Regards,

Year Three Teaching Team
