Year Two

Dear Year Two Families,

We would like to congratulate all students on a successful Term 1 of learning and we look forward to students returning back to school ready for Term 2.

Unit of Inquiry 1: How We Express Ourselves

We have come to the end of our first unit of inquiry.

This week students were able to finish their research about a culture of their choice and create their own presentation showcasing their new knowledge learnt.

We welcomed families to attend a cultural picnic to celebrate a variety of cultures through conversation and food. Students had the opportunity to showcase their presentations and learning with their families.

Reading:

In Reading students have been learning about text connections including, text to self, text to text and text to world connections. Students enjoyed reading texts about a range of cultures and using text connections. Students have also been exposed to questioning whilst reading.

Writing:

In writing, students have been exploring poetry and beginning to compose their own poems. They have learned about Cinquain poems and will continue to explore haikus.

Additionally, students have enjoyed Readers' Theater, using their problem-solving skills to identify different characters and narrators, which allows them to bring their creativity to life!

Spelling:

In Spelling, students have been exploring the 'oo' sound and how there are two differences: long and short 'oo' sounds. They are also learning about the use of capital letters, full stops and nouns.

Mathematics:

In Mathematics students have been learning to round numbers to the nearest 10 and 100's while using a number line.

Building on their knowledge of number lines Students have been learning to explain their thinking by count forwards and backwards by 1s, 10s and 100s from a given number with or without internal zeros.

In addition to this students have been learning how to use their knowledge of place value to rename numbers as it allows for the students to make numbers in a variety of ways up to 1000's.
