Year One

Dear Year One Community,

It’s hard to believe we are already at the end of Term One! Our Year Ones have been incredibly busy and excited to learn across various subjects. We are extremely proud of all of their efforts and a highly successful Term One! Here’s a snapshot of what they have been up to recently:

Reading

Students have been developing their visualising skills in Reading by creating mental images while reading. They have also been exploring nouns and verbs, learning to identify and use them effectively in sentences. These skills help strengthen their comprehension and writing abilities.

Writing

In Writing, students have been exploring nouns and verbs to enhance their sentence structure. They have also been focusing on recount writing, using the 5 W’s—Who, What, When, Where, and Why—to add detail and make their writing more engaging. Through this, they are developing their ability to structure clear and informative recounts.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, students have been exploring number partitioning to develop a deeper understanding of how numbers are made up. They have used part-part-whole relationships to partition and combine collections up to 10, while also using subitising to quickly recognise and name the parts within a whole. Students have also been working on partitioning one- and two-digit numbers in different ways, using physical and virtual materials to break numbers apart, including separating two-digit numbers into tens and ones. These skills are essential for building number sense and developing strong mental maths strategies.

Inquiry

This week, we launched our brand-new Unit of Inquiry with the central idea: Understanding and respecting others supports us in building positive relationships. To spark curiosity, students engaged in a provocation designed to pique their interest and encourage deep thinking. We also explored the key vocabulary within the central idea to build a shared understanding of what we will be learning throughout this unit. Stay tuned as we continue to investigate and uncover new insights in the coming weeks!
