Year 6 Spotlight
This term, Year 6s have been inquiring into different styles of leadership and how to be an effective leader. They attended the National Young Leaders Day conference at the Melbourne Convention Centre, and put new learning into practice through their various roles around the school.
This term, Year 6 leaders have undertaken their leadership roles by:
- School captains have run school tours on Friday mornings with Mr Cooper and Mrs Despotellis
- House Captains have taken ownership of the sports equipment borrowing system
- JSC and LOTE leaders have been a part of Harmony Day activities
- Assembly term leaders have successfully delivered assembly on Wednesday afternoons displaying their public speaking skills
- STEM leaders have been working hard solving technical issues around the school as well as introducing e-Smart week.
- All Grade 6s are responsible for setting a good example for younger students around the school, both in the yard and classroom.
Night of the Notables
To begin Year 6, students participate in our ‘Sharing the Planet’ unit of Inquiry, which culminates in the ‘Night of the Notables’, where students inquire into a notable person/leader in our society. This notable person is someone who inspires them or who they aspire to be like, especially when it comes to leadership. This inquiry involves lots of research into the notable person, with the creation of a biography and a timeline of key events, along with lots of reflection into you as a person and a leader. Students create stalls which showcase their findings, and they have the opportunity to dress up as the notable person to add an extra element to the display.
The Central Idea of this Unit of Inquiry is; Different leadership roles and qualities affect the way the world changes and how individuals develop as unique leaders.
The Lines of Inquiry are:
- What makes leadership effective
- The different leadership roles in society
- Reflecting on your own strengths and values can inspire leadership
Attached are some pictures of our Year 6s working hard creating their stalls in preparation for this year’s Night of the Notables.
Congratulations to all the Year 6 students for embarking on this wonderful learning journey.
