Exploring the Ethical Use of AI at the Library

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is changing the way we live, learn, and work – and Wyndham College is part of this evolution. Most schools in Australia are being supported to use AI in smart and ethical ways, thanks to a national plan known as the Australian Framework for Generative AI in Schools. This was introduced in late 2023 to help students, teachers, and schools understand and safely use AI tools in the classroom.

At Wyndham College, we are using these national guidelines to help shape how AI is used in our learning environment. For example, some teachers are using AI tools to help plan lessons or come up with learning activities. These tools are designed to save time and support quality teaching – but always in a way that keeps students safe and learning responsibly.

Our library team is also taking a new role in supporting students with AI use. Traditionally, teacher librarians and library staff have helped students learn how to find reliable information and use technology wisely. Now, they're also helping students build AI literacy. That means understanding how AI works, how it can be used in learning, and how to think critically about the information it creates.

Education is a big part of becoming good AI citizens – people who use AI tools with care, fairness, and awareness of how it affects others. All students should be familiar with the College AI use policy on our website and follow the guide for ethical AI use which is attached to assessment tasks. The policy will be updated regularly in response to the way AI is used in schools. https://wyndhamcol-h.schools.nsw.gov.au/about-our-school/rules-and-policies.html

So next time you're in the library, don’t be surprised if the conversation turns to ChatGPT, AI-generated images, or how AI might change future careers.

Important Reminder for Year 11 & 12: Study Session Sign-In and Expectations

Sign-In Required

If you have a study session during the school day, you must sign in at either the Library or the Learning Hub. Your name will be marked off, and this attendance is a mandatory part of your overall school attendance. This is important not just for records, but for building good habits that support your learning.

Where to Go :

  • Library – A quiet space for focused, independent study. Please use this area for silent work, reading, and concentration.
  • Learning Hub – A more relaxed space for group work, collaboration, or eating while studying. Quiet talking is allowed here, but it’s still a learning space.
  • Green Cards - Some students may be given permission to sit outside the Library or Hub or can request a green card to work in another faculty area of the school.

Staff Support Available

Teachers and support staff are present in these areas to help you with your study, answer questions, or guide you if you’re unsure how to spend your time productively. Make the most of this extra help.

Study Sessions at Home

You may choose to study at home only if your study session falls in the first or last period of the day. If your study session is in the middle of the day, you must remain at school and sign in.

Why Attendance Matters

Good attendance in your study sessions helps you stay on top of your coursework, builds responsibility, and sets you up for success in Year 11 and 12, and beyond. Remember, these sessions are part of your school timetable, just like any other class. Let’s make every session count.
