Student Taking Action for Peace and Creation
At GNLC, we are inspired by God's call to be stewards of creation and to live in peace with the natural world. In the PYP, students are encouraged to take action by exploring issues that matter to them and using their gifts to care for our planet.
Tora from 5C recently reflected on a personal inquiry she completed during the holidays:
“The project was a research project about a sea creature. I chose frilled sharks. I had to research and find facts about the sea creature that connected to literacy, inquiry and mathematics. For math, I calculated and analysed population data. At the end I created an information poster on frilled sharks and how to protect them. I also published a visual narrative that persuaded the reader to learn about and care for the frilled shark. I feel really proud of my work and how much effort I put into my research and published pieces.”
By creating a poster and persuasive narrative, Tora aimed to raise awareness about frilled sharks and how to protect them.

Supporting Action in the MYP
Taking action is a key part of learning that reflects the IB’s mission to develop active, compassionate, and lifelong learners. Through action, students apply their knowledge to real world challenges and demonstrate IB Learner Profile attributes such as being caring, principled, and reflective.
As part of their MYP journey, Year 9 students undergo the Community Project. An opportunity for students to take the lead, identify something that matters to them and do something about it. Deepening their connection of their learning in the classroom to the real world.
Parents can support this by encouraging conversations about issues their child cares about and helping them reflect on their choices and impact. The action doesn’t need to be big, what matters is that it’s thoughtful and authentic.
