Business Innovation Classes Explore SA’s Successful Enterprises

Our Business Innovation classes recently embarked on an insightful excursion to Melba’s Chocolate Factory and Beerenberg, two iconic South Australian businesses. The purpose of the visit was to study these successful enterprises and explore ways to improve and innovate their operations.

During the tour, students had the opportunity to observe firsthand the inner workings of these businesses, gaining valuable insights into their strategies for success. They examined various aspects of the businesses, from production processes to marketing techniques, and discussed potential innovations that could enhance their operations.

Following the visits to Melba’s and Beerenberg, the students traveled to Hahndorf, a charming tourist destination. Here, they conducted interviews with business owners and customers to understand why tourists are drawn to Hahndorf and how local businesses manage to stay afloat in a changing economy. These interviews provided students with a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities faced by businesses in a dynamic and ever changing market.

This excursion was an excellent opportunity for our students to apply their classroom knowledge to real-world scenarios, fostering their analytical and creative thinking skills. We are proud of their enthusiasm and the insights they gained from this experience.

Thank you to all the business owners and customers who participated in the interviews and to Melba’s Chocolate Factory and Beerenberg for hosting our students. Your support made this educational experience possible and memorable.

Selected for Youth Mentor Support Leaders Program

We are thrilled to announce that Student Representative Council (SRC) Leaders - Saba D and Kasey G have been selected to participate in the Youth Mentor Support Leaders program, an integral part of the Wellbeing Wednesdays Project at Onkaparinga Youth.

This youth-led initiative is designed to equip young people with the tools and skills to connect, build resilience, and engage in open conversations around mental health through safe, community-based peer-to-peer intervention.

As Youth Mentor Support Leaders, Saba and Kasey will play a vital role in guiding and supporting their peers, advocating for a culture of care, and helping to create a supportive environment within the group. This voluntary role also includes valuable training, such as Mental Health First Aid and other tailored sessions, to prepare them for their responsibilities.

Program Highlights:

  • Wellbeing Wednesdays: Sessions held on Wednesday afternoons at Aberfoyle Community Centre, focusing on peer support, restorative practice, and self-care strategies.
  • Four Pillars of Peer Support:
    • Connection: Fostering genuine connections between mentors and participants.
    • Worldview: Developing an understanding of thoughts, feelings, and actions.
    • Mutuality: Establishing a bilateral, community-based relationship.
    • Moving Towards: Focusing on goals and desires, not just problems and solutions.

We are incredibly proud of Saba and Kasey and look forward to seeing the positive impact they will make in their roles as Youth Mentor Support Leaders.

Celebrating Creativity: Community Studies Project

We are thrilled to share the outstanding work of Emma F, a Year 12 student, who has been diligently working on her Community Studies Project. Emma’s project involves creating a beautiful painting inspired by native birds from Australia and the Aberfoyle Park area.

This artwork will soon be displayed on the stobie pole located at the front of our school, near the gate by the language classrooms.

Emma’s journey began with her initial sketches and ideas, which have now evolved into a stunning final product. Her dedication to this project has been remarkable, involving gaining approval from the council and SA Power Networks, as well as meticulous planning and painting.

Currently, Emma’s final artwork is on display in the office area of D04. We encourage everyone to drop by and admire her work before it is permanently placed.

Celebrating Success at the World Skills Challenge

We are thrilled to announce the outstanding achievements of two of our students in the recent heats of the World Skills Challenge for VET. Angus B. emerged as the winner, with Ethan B. securing the runner-up position. Both students have demonstrated exceptional skill and dedication, and we are proud to see them advance to the next round of this prestigious competition.

The World Skills Challenge is a remarkable platform that allows young people to showcase their talents, benchmark industry excellence, and champion skills pathways. It is an opportunity for students to gain recognition for their hard work and to inspire others to pursue excellence in their chosen fields.

Angus and Ethan participated as part of their VET - Certificate II in Construction course. Their success is a testament to the quality of our vocational education and training programs and the commitment of our students and staff.

Well done to all the VET students who participated in the challenge.

We are incredibly proud of their achievements and look forward to seeing what they accomplish next.
