Japanese Study Tour: A Memorable Visit

On Monday, 12 August, we bid farewell to our visiting Japanese Study Tour students from Kandai Hokuyo High School as they headed off to the airport.

Their visit was filled with enriching experiences and cultural exchanges that left a lasting impression on both the students and our school community.

During their stay, the students immersed themselves in our school life by joining buddy classes, where they formed friendships and shared learning experiences with our students. They also enjoyed an educational excursion to Adelaide University and the Adelaide Zoo, where they explored the local wildlife and academic environment.

In addition to these activities, the new international students attended the IES welcome event. This excursion provided them with valuable information about the programs available during their stay and offered a unique opportunity to experience First Nations culture, deepening their understanding of Australia’s rich heritage.

Before their departure, we celebrated their time with us by hosting a quintessential Aussie send-off – a sausage sizzle farewell party. The event was a hit, with everyone enjoying the delicious food and festive atmosphere.

The students expressed their gratitude and shared that they had an amazing time. Their accompanying teacher highlighted that our school stood out as the best among the three that hosted students from Kandai Hokuyo High School on this trip.

We are proud to have been part of this wonderful cultural exchange and look forward to future such enriching experiences.

Commemorating the 79th Anniversary of Hiroshima and Nagasaki

On Thursday, 15 August we held a special combined Japanese and HASS class to commemorate the 79th anniversary of the nuclear attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

This significant event aimed to honor the memory of those affected and to educate our students about this pivotal moment in history.

As part of the lesson, we gathered a variety of resources to provide a comprehensive understanding of the events. One of the key materials was a documentary that vividly portrayed the tragic occurrences of that time. This served as a powerful tool to help students grasp the gravity of the events and their lasting impact.

Following the documentary, students were encouraged to create their own personal messages of hope. Additionally, they crafted origami cranes, which we sent to the War Memorial and Peace Park in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This activity not only fostered creativity but also symbolized our collective wish for peace and reconciliation.

The primary goals of this lesson were to ensure that history is neither forgotten nor repeated, to raise awareness and foster intercultural understanding, and to provide students with an opportunity to learn about a significant event that is deeply woven into the fabric of Japanese culture. Through this lesson, we aimed to engage, intrigue, and deepen our collective compassion, empathy, and gratitude—core values that are integral to both our school and Japanese culture.

We look back on this meaningful commemoration and the valuable lessons it imparted to our students with a sense of pride and reflection.
