Book Week 2024
Last week was Book Week at the college with the theme ‘Reading is Magic’. There were many activities organised and run to promote the importance of reading and the opportunities it provides to those who engage with reading. None were better than the Book Week Dress Up Day. The students and staff had a great time and celebrated with a genuine enthusiasm for the event.
RUOK Day – Thursday 12th September
Got a feeling that someone you know or care about isn’t behaving as they normally would? Perhaps they seem out of sorts?
More agitated or withdrawn?
Or they’re just not themselves. Trust that gut instinct and act on it.
By starting a conversation and commenting on the changes you’ve noticed, you could help that family member, friend or workmate open up. If they say they are not OK, you can follow our conversation steps to show them they’re supported and help them find strategies to better manage the load. If they are OK, that person will know you’re someone who cares enough to ask.
Lalor Secondary College will host a BBQ for every student at the college with the theme - 'Lalor Stops So YOU Can Start'. A message that has and will be delivered multiple times over last week and this week to ensure students understand that 'RUOK Day' is not about mental illness but rather mental health and wellbeing. It is an opportunity for our community to pause and check in with one another.
Anyone looking for more information on this initiative can find information on the following website - https://www.ruok.org.au/
Unit 3 / 4 Practice Exams
All students who are completing exams for Unit 3/4 subjects at the end of the year will be involved in the Indicative / Practice Exam program held over the holidays starting on Wednesday the 25th of September and finishing Tuesday the 1st of October. These exams provide excellent practice for students and will provide quality feedback to them on their progress to date. Teachers will also use these exams to assist them with estimating their indicative grades which they report to VCAA as an estimate on what they think each student can achieve in the final exam.
The Year 12 students are also currently involved in completing their VTAC applications. This is an online process that all students must complete if they wish to attend University or TAFE in 2025. Each student is or has met with our Careers Coordinator Ms Charalambous to receive advice and guidance on this important process, as well as receiving information on scholarships and Special Entry Access Schemes. I encourage all parents of year 12 students to sit down and go through this process with them, so you understand what is involved and what your child is planning for 2025.
The last day of Term 3 will be Friday the 20th of September. Students and parents are reminded that school will finish at 1.12pm on this day. Please make appropriate arrangements as required to manage this change.
If you have any questions about any of the formation listed above, please contact me via the general office or on 9463 7300.
