Level 1 & 2 Wonga Weekly

Week 8, Term 3

In Week 8 we are learning about...

📚 ENGLISH

In Reading, we will be  examining the text, 'Two Mates' by Melanie Prewett. This text provides us with great examples of inclusion and respect. Students will consider how the text connects to the Paralympic values of equality, courage, determination and inspiration. Students will also unpack the vocabulary presented in the text.

In Writing, we will build our knowledge of sentence fluency. We will examine compound sentences from the mentor text and practise writing our own, considering how to use conjunctions to help build powerful sentences. Sentence conventions will also be a focus, as we work hard to remember that sentences must start with a capital letter and finish with boundary punctuation.

In Phonics, we will continue our focus on saying and hearing sounds in words to assist us with spelling. In Grade 1, students will learn about closed and open syllables . In Grade 2, students will learn about the vowel teams the make the long vowel sounds.

What you can do at home

You might like to practise some of the phonics we are working on in the classroom this week. You can find optional tasks to do at home at the end of this week's edition of the Wonga Weekly.  These tasks will support our classroom focusses for the week.

🎲 NUMERACY

We will continue our focus on fractions. Students will practice finding half of a whole shape and half of a collection of items. They will also revisit the related vocabulary of 'even' and 'uneven' through completing tasks involving paper folding.

This week we will also continue measuring. Our tasks will be related to the concepts weight, mass and capacity. We will link this learning to our fraction focus too, where possible.

What you can do at home:

The kitchen is a mathematical tool shop when exploring measurement! Have a look through your cupboards and draws with your child to help them find the tools the we use to measure while we are cooking. Do any of the tools have fractions printed on them?

If you have a spare afternoon, bake a special treat with your child. The conversations you can have about maths will flow naturally. Talk about the tools you are using and notice the weight measurements in the recipe and on the ingredient packaging. Talk about doubling and halving, and measurements in fractions.

Finally, enjoy the moment when you get to sit together and taste the delicious treat you have created!

🌄 CBL - Respect

This week will continue to build a response to our challenge, 'teach others about the importance of respecting yourself and others'. Students will plan for the design of our 'Respect' mural that we will build together.

This term, our CBL work links directly to the 'Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships' program and we are completing many of the related topics during the term.

THINGS TO CONSIDER

Our Book Fair will be held this week from the 2nd - 6th September. It will be set up in our current library space for the week and is open before and after school for the purchase of books. You may even like to purchase a book to donate to your child's classroom library.

HATS ON

As of September 1st, we would like to remind you that our school adheres to the SunSmart policy set by the Victorian Government. All students are required to wear a broad-brimmed hat when outdoors from the 1st September when UV levels are typically higher.

Please ensure your child brings a hat to school every day to protect them from the sun's harmful rays.

Thank you for your support in keeping our school community safe and sun-smart.
