World's Greatest Shave

Science Week
Science Week was celebrated in Week 5 at the college. Each day commenced with a homegroup quiz and students were able to participate in a range of lunchtime activities including making Elephant's Toothpaste, doing a Pop Test, tug-o-war and more! Well done to the Science Team for organising the activities during Science Week and thank you to the students who got involved.
Science Club
Last week in Science Club our young scientists made elephant toothpaste in a paper mache volcano!
Book Week
Book Week was celebrated in a range of creative and colourful ways this year, with students and staff having fun with the theme of ‘Reading is Magic’.
The Lowanna Library was transformed into an Alice in Wonderland theme creating much excitement about the week’s festivities for both staff and students. The library was a hub of activity all week as students enjoyed competitions such as Disney Trivia, a Scavenger Hunt and guessing the number of lollies in the jar. Each day, staff and students were able to test their knowledge about books in an online quiz with daily prizes. There was also a Book Swap on Tuesday of Book Week where both staff and students were able to donate pre-loved books and take some new one’s home.
The main event for the week was the Character Dress-Up Day which saw staff and many students dressed up as characters from a range of books and genres including Pirates of the Caribbean, Harry Potter, Alice in Wonderland, Little Red Riding Hood, the Wizard of Oz and much more!
This was our third year of celebrating Book Week and judging by the smiling faces of our students and staff and the crowds in our library, it was great fun enjoyed by all.
“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.”
Snow Camp
In Week 6, 24 students attended the annual Snow Camp at Falls Creek! Students enjoyed spending the week on the mountain, learning new skills through skiing/snowboarding lessons and spending time with their friends and staff in a different environment.
College Fete
Last week our VCE- VM students organised and hosted a college fete where our community was able to enjoy a variety of food trucks, live music by our talented students, market stalls and much more. Thank you to everyone involved in organising the event and thank you to all the market stall holders, food trucks and businesses who donated their goods to the fete.
Transition Day
In Week 6 we welcomed current Grade 6 students who will be transitioning to Year 7 in 2025. It was great to have their energy and excitement at the college as they were introduced to what high school life will be like for them next year. Our staff organised a range of activities and classes for students to participate in throughout the day.

Our annual Presentation Night is being held on Wednesday the 18th of December at 7pm in the college Auditorium. Pencil this date into your calendar as it is an important and memorable night to celebrate the success of our students throughout 2024. More information will be available in Term 4.
Exchange Student Welcome
Last month we had a few exchange students commence at college. Some of the Year 11 girls made an 'Aussie snacks' platter for new student, Laura, to try which included cheezels, lollies, fairy bread, freddo frogs and lamingtons. A big welcome to all of our exchange students, we hope you are enjoying your time at the college.
Sox Update
Sox, our therapy dog, has been with us for one year at the start of next term! What a wonderful edition she has been to the college community.
First Aid Message
Dear Parents, Guardians and Carers,
There has been a noticeable increase in students having breathing difficulties at school. If your child has Asthma, please remind them to carry their own Asthma inhaler.
There are still some students that have not supplied the school with Asthma Action Plans - please get these organised, and return to the college as soon as possible.
A lot of students have been presenting at First Aid asking for Panadol/Nurofen. The school does not supply medication like Panadol/Nurofen to students unless they have it themselves. This needs to be taken to the First Aid room and a Medical Authority Form needs to be completed for the school to give the medication to students. Students are not to leave medication in their bags.
Thank you,
Michelle Dodkins
First Aid Officer
West Gippsland Basketball
Our Year 7-8 Boys and Girls Basketball Teams played in the West Gippsland Basketball Competition recently, where the Year 7 Boys Team and Year 8 Girls Team won the round robin - congratulations!

Updates from the Kitchen
Our Year 8 Food Technology students enjoyed baking homemade cookies recently - yum!
Year 8 Food Technology students recently made breakfast burgers, designing their own recipe - something healthy that they can now make at home!
Year 9 Food Technology students recently made yeast-based pizza dough, topping them with their choice of vegetables, meats and cheese.
In Week 6, Year 10 Cafe Culture students completed a Barista Course and Safe Food Handling Course, where they made delicious coffees and other hot drinks to practice their coffee making skills. Both certificates are recognised Australia wide. Thank you to Short Courses Australia for running this training for our students.
Important Food Tech Notice
Attention Food Technology students (and parents/guardians),
It an expectation that students bring a container to every practical class so that they have something to bring their food home in. As of Term 4, the college will not be providing forks, spoons, knives or containers - students will be expected to bring these to class themselves.
Parent/guardian assistance with reminding students to do this will be much appreciated, thank you.
Automotive News
There are exciting things happening in the college's automotive space! The college has acquired a Honda Jazz for automotive students to learn how to fix car parts, and we also have four car simulators!
On Friday the 16th of August the ABC visited the college to complete filming after Year 10 student, Ryden Munday, was recently announced a winner at the ABC Takeover Latrobe Valley Youth Storytelling Competition. Ryden's story was about his love of automotive class and the support he receives from his teacher's. The story will be shared at the Takeover Latrobe Valley Gala Night this month as a 90 second reel to be shared on ABC's social media pages. Well done Ryden!
Express Writeup
Congratulations to Year 12 student Liam Sultana whose opinion piece was published in the Latrobe Valley Express recently. Liam's writeup speaks about his concerns regarding the use of nuclear energy into the future - a very interesting and thought-provoking read. Well done Liam.
Rawson Primary School Visit
Our Music Team has been working with Rawson Primary School after they expressed an interest for their students to have more involvement in music. Rawson Primary School have visited the college three times this term, learning simple popular songs on the ukulele. Students have been shown ensembles that use all of the instruments we teach at Lowanna, and Miss Morgan's Middle School class has been working on the song during their normal class time which allowed them to give Rawson Primary School students a live band experience a couple of weeks ago. It was a pleasure having Rawson Primary School visit the college.
Mario Kart Competition
Thank you to our SRC who organised a lunchtime Mario Kart Competition during Week 5. Congratulations to our winners:
Junior winner - Klohe Sena
Senior winner - Zakk Shaw
Staff winner - Mr. Justin Rea

Attention Year 10 parents/guardians, please read the attached letter regarding your Year 10 student.
Calves Depart the College
We recently farewelled two dairy claves from the college who were part of the Cows Create Careers Program, who have been returned to their mum's after a content and happy stay at the college. Pictured below are two of our students feeding the calves during their roster time. Students are rostered during and before/after school as part of their Agricultural Studies class, teaching them the importance and responsibility that comes with caring for animals.
Resource Smart Schools
Last Friday Simone from Resource Smart Schools attended the college and facilitated an online meeting with our Agricultural Studies class and Green Tradies students. The visit was about highlighting the work that the college does around sustainability and celebrating the learnings from our Agricultural Studies class and the Green Tradies Program. Students from the Agricultural Studies class and the Green Tradies Program spoke about what they do in class - from feeding the calves that have recently been lent to us from local farmer Stuart Griffin, to the work that the Green Tradies are doing in the garden. Well done to the staff involved - Mrs. Stewart and Tom Kelly, and students Noah Parkinson, Sophie Vosper, Matilda Wood, Sarah Dyer, Brianna Leonard and Matilda Smith.
