Mathematical Modelling in the Revised Victorian Maths Curriculum

In 2025, the Mathematics curriculum is moving from the 1.0 version to the 2.0 version. As ENPS teachers, we have been inquiring into the changes throughout 2024 ready to implement next year. As part of our professional learning with the Maths Association Victoria (MAV), Renee recently led us through a session to explore what mathematical modelling is, which is a new element within the revised curriculum. As teachers, we anticipated a challenging task linked to mathematical modelling in a traffic accident. Lots of great mathematical discussions occurred between the teaching staff using known mathematical understandings.

We also discussed the importance of anticipating a lesson as part of the launch - explore - summary teaching model. The article attached below further discusses what mathematical modelling looks like in a classroom.
