R U OK? Day

Thursday 12th September, 2024

Hello ENPS Families,

This week, ENPS will be acknowledging an important day known as R U OK? Day. It’s a day dedicated to checking in with each other and making sure everyone feels supported and cared for. But what does R U OK? actually mean?

What is R U OK? Day?

R U OK? Day is a day in Australia dedicated to promoting mental health and encouraging open conversations. It’s a time when we all come together to ask the simple but important question: “Are you OK?”. It’s a way to show that we care about the people around us, whether it’s friends, family, or classmates. It is also an opportunity for us to learn important conversation skills that we can use any day of the year.

Why is it Important?

Sometimes, people might not feel comfortable talking about how they’re feeling. They might be going through a tough time or feeling overwhelmed. By asking “Are you OK?”, we open up the door for conversations that can help others feel understood and less alone. It’s all about building a supportive community where everyone knows they can share their feelings - not just on R U OK? Day, but every day.

How Can We Participate?

Although R U OK? Day falls on Thursday, 12th September, at ENPS, we’re celebrating with a week of lunchtime activities for students. These activities will take place in the undercover area. See the poster below for what’s happening!

How Can You Help at Home?

You can support R U OK? Day at home too! Here are some simple ways to do this:

  • Ask and Listen: Take a moment to ask family members how they’re doing and listen to what they say.
  • Share Your Feelings: Let your children know it’s okay to talk about their feelings and that you’re always there to listen.
  • Model Empathy: Show empathy and encourage open conversations about emotions and wellbeing.

Remember, asking “Are you OK?” can make a big difference in someone’s day. I encourage you to visit https://www.ruok.org.au to learn more about building positive mental health strategies.

Warm regards,
