Grade 4
Writing
After successfully convincing Mr Abdallah that Grayling does in fact need a canteen, the Grade 4’s have started looking at Information Texts. We have been looking at the structure of them and how to write them properly. Students have been investigating what nonfiction text features are such as, table of contents, glossary, diagrams, etc. They are very different from persuasive texts and this time they include our favourite things, Subheadings!
Reading
We have moved on from our persuasive reading inline with our writing sessions. This week the year 4’s started to look at how information reports need to be read. They have seen that it is not just reading text from left to right. They now know when to read specific passages in the reports. They can also find the specific information in each section. Why not ask your child to show you where to find the information ion a topic you enjoy. They are very good at it already.
Maths
Over the past few weeks, the Grade 4’s have been exploring fractions and decimals. We started by learning how to identify fractions and how to place them on a number line. We then practised comparing fractions to see which are larger or smaller. Finally, we connected fractions with decimals, understanding how they can show the same values in different ways.
Integrated
We have recently moved onto learning about past events and celebrations of the past. Specifically, with the inspiration of the Paris 2024 Olympics, we decided to have a focus on the history of the Olympics. The students have enjoyed learning about where the Olympics originated from, the importance of the event, and the reinvention of the Olympics. Over the next few weeks, students will head into small inquiry groups to research a certain Olympics beginning from the Sydney 2000 Olympics.
Respectful Relationships
We’re excited to spotlight The Smart Cookie by Jory John. This delightful book is part of the “Food Group” series and follows the story of a cookie who feels pressured to be perfect and prove their smarts. Through clever illustrations and a heartfelt story, the book teaches valuable lessons about self-acceptance and the importance of being true to yourself. Students drew themselves as smart cookies, highlighting the areas they are clever or good in! It was great to see so many unique cookies and all of their talents.
