Grade 3
Reading
This fortnight, students have been reading ‘Give Me Some Space!’. Through this book, they have been able to practise using their comprehension strategies, reading with fluency and have even learnt some awesome facts about our Solar System. Students have loved reading about Una’s adventures through space and the teachers have loved the curiosity it has sparked.
Students loved Book Week, where they got to participate in fun activities such as design book covers for made up (and silly) book titles, write a sequel to Cat in the Hat and redesign existing children’s picture book covers. Of course they also loved dressing up as their favourite book characters and participating in the parade.
Spelling
Grade Three students have been hard at work learning and using new spelling rules that explain how words with the long E and A sounds are spelled. They have learnt new chants and songs to help them remember how to spell more difficult words like ‘February’ and ‘beginning’.
Writing Grade Three students have been busy exploring the difference between facts and opinions! They've delved into understanding the difference between statements that can be proven true or false and those that are based on personal beliefs and feelings.
With enthusiasm, students engaged in hands-on activities designed to sharpen their analytical skills. They sorted various statements into “fact” and “opinion” categories. For example, they learned that “The Earth orbits the Sun” is a fact because it can be verified by evidence, while “Chocolate ice cream is the best flavour” is an opinion, reflecting personal taste.
Students will take this knowledge and understanding into their upcoming informative writing, which will incorporate rich and interesting facts about different topics.Maths This fortnight in Maths, our students have been diving into fractions and measurement. We explored how fractions are parts of a whole, specifically focusing on placing fractions on a number line that starts at 0 and ends at 1. The students began by identifying and labelling fractions like 1/2, 1/3, and 1/4 on a number line and then progressed to creating their own number lines with different fractions.
In addition to fractions, we explored the concept of mass and volume, focusing on millilitres, litres, grams, and milligrams. The students engaged in hands-on activities where they measured various objects using scales and measured liquids with measuring cups. These practical experiences helped them better understand how different units of measurement relate to each other and apply these concepts in real-world situations.
Integrated
This week in Integration, our students embarked on an exciting journey back in time to discover the origins of the Olympic Games in ancient Greece. We kicked off by exploring why the Olympics began and how they were a big deal in Greek history. The students got creative, working in small groups to compare the ancient games with the modern Olympics. They even created tables in their books to sort out all the cool facts and spot the differences and similarities. It was a lively and fun-filled lesson as they pieced together the story of how the Olympics have evolved!
