Grade 1

Literacy

In Literacy, we have explored the doubling rule for ff, ll and ss. Each day, students completed a follow up activity based on the explicit teaching for the session, as well as consolidating their prior knowledge by participating in a range of activities such as banana bingo, word sorting and more.

This fortnight in Storybook, we have read the text ‘The Day The Crayons Quit’ and delved into the meaning of the words: gorgeous, congratulate and prove. Students spent time summarising the story by identifying what happened in the beginning, middle and end. They wrote a persuasive text based on the text which will be their Writing learning task for Term 3.

Maths

In the past fortnight, students have continued their learning of partitioning, further utilising this skill within the ‘Split Strategy’ in subtraction. The Grade 1’s have also started learning about groups of addition and subtraction sums that derive from a set of 3 numbers known as ‘Fact Families’.

In addition, students have commenced their learning of Number Talks. Developing fluency and conceptual understanding, the Grade 1’s were mentally solving mathematical problems whilst talking about the thought processes and strategies they used. Through the engagement of this, students were able to explain their thinking whilst simultaneously providing themselves a chance to self-correct, deepening their number sense.

Integrated

This fortnight in Integrated Studies, Year 1 students have been learning about the weather and the changes observed in the seasons. They have worked in groups to decide what clothes are appropriate for different weather conditions and have discussed their favourite seasons and given reasons for their choices to the class.

Respectful Relationships

This fortnight, Students in Year 1  have been working together to better understand stress and how to manage their stress when faced with unfamiliar situations. They worked in groups and brainstormed situations that can be stressful and worked together to come up with strategies to help them cope in these situations.

Book Week

Students eagerly participated in Book Week. As part of the celebrations, students participated in a dress up parade with the other year levels and completed a range of activities throughout the day.
