Girton Racing Team

During the holidays, the Girton Racing Team was a part of the Bendigo Easter Torchlight Procession on the evening of 30 March and the Gala Parade on the afternoon of 31 March.

How did we end up there, you ask? We were invited by the committee of Energy Breakthrough (EB runs our biggest race of the year, at Maryborough in November) to help show off the sport to the general public. Girton came bearing two trikes: a human-powered vehicle (HPV) named Intrepid, and an energy-efficient vehicle (EEV) named Xception. Victory Christian College joined us with two HPVs, and Bendigo Senior with one HPV, one hybrid and one EEV.

The parade began on View Street at the Queen Elizabeth Oval and finished at the Bridge/Water Street intersection, in total a 1.5-kilometre ride. During the torchlight parade, Jack Pickering (8 Millward) pedalled Intrepid alongside Sebastien Loraine (9 Aherne) in Xception. It's most likely the slowest 1.5 kilometres the trikes have ever done! The following afternoon, Annika Hall (7 Riley) and Jack Pickering operated Intrepid, while Henry Hall (9 Riley) and Sebastien Loraine manned the EEV.

The parade aimed to showcase the trikes and the sport that comes with them and to hopefully promote Energy Breakthrough and some of our teams. With any luck, the parade onlookers would have noticed the enormous banner with Energy Breakthrough plastered all over it – best-case scenario, they'll search eb.org.au!

Many thanks to the families who brought their children to the parade, and a massive shout-out to Mr Robin Kirby for once again volunteering his time for us during both parades, as well as a big thank you to Mr Vernon, Ms Loraine and Ms Crane for supporting us during the parades.
