Free workshop for parents and carers of learner and novice drivers - Monday 6 May

As part of National Road Safety Week (5-12 May) we are pleased to announce that Road Safety Education Limited (RSE), providers of Australia's largest and pre-eminent road safety education program, RYDA, launching our Drive Coach program in Tasmania  – a new program aimed at helping parents and carers as they teach their teens to drive.

All parents and carers are invited to attend, especially those of students who will be participating in RYDA this year (Year 10), to the Drive Coach workshop being held in Hobart on Monday 6 May.

This workshop aims to give parents a background on the risks young people face on the road (as drivers and passengers of novice drivers). Road trauma statistics indicate Provisional Licence drivers face the highest risk of being involved in crashes in their first year of driving. We’ll discuss the challenges of teaching a young person how to drive and give parents tips on how they can partner with their teen to make sure they have the tools they need to make good choices and stay safe.

The importance of parents and their role in keeping their teens safe throughout the many stages of learning to drive is well documented. However, they are not often given all the tools for the job. Research shows that the way parents engage with their teens through the learn-to-drive journey can have a significant impact when it comes to creating safer drivers who take less risks. RSE, through the Drive Coach program aims to equip parents and carers with the tools they need and support them on this very important journey. This includes how to interact and engage with driving instructors.

This practical workshop which updates parents on latest research and road safety approaches, outlines some of the conversations and strategies our facilitators share with their teens at RYDA and gives them an opportunity to ask questions and get advice from the experts.
