In the last week of Term 1, students represented SCC at the Da Vinci Decathlon at the Hutchins School. The Decathlon is a demanding team competition. Students were required to complete a series of challenge tasks in key disciplines, including English, Mathematics, Science, Engineering, Ideation (creative problem solving), Art and Poetry. This is the first time SCC has participated in the Decathlon. Staff accompanying the teams praised their outstanding teamwork and determination. They certainly appeared exhausted when they returned at the end of an intense day.
Esther, one of our Year 11 students, has a love for the natural world. Esther enjoys creating art, bushwalking and reading fantasy. Last year Esther created “Sylvan Song”, her first children’s book, using her artistic skills, Esther illustrated and wrote a story around things that she loves.
Last term, Esther had the privilege to read her story to groups of students from Kinder to Year 9 at Emmanuel Christian School. Esther enjoyed reading her story and answering questions.
Year 7 students have been having fun with "The Wellerman," a popular sea shanty. They've been learning how to sing together and play percussion instruments. This has been a great way for them to work as a team and improve their musical skills.
The students in Year 8 have focused on understanding chord structures and playing music in small groups. They've used old and modern church music to learn these skills and also talked about the role of music in religious worship through history.
Students in Years 9 and 10 have been exploring how to compose their own music using digital tools. They've learned about MIDI, using different sound effects in Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs), and recording their own songs. This has been a chance for them to get creative with music in their favourite genres.
Year 11 students have been listening to a wide range of music genres and breaking them down to understand the different elements that make up a song. They've been working on composing music for string quartets, experimenting with different musical modes, and improving their performance skills.
Our Rockband got a boost with some new members this year. Even though there were a few interruptions and illnesses along the way, everyone put in a lot of effort during practice. The band has been focusing on getting better at playing together, especially with our older students at school events like the recent Easter Assembly doing a phenomenal job leading the song “The Passion” by Brooke Ligertwood. The Senior band lead worship at assembly this week for the new building dedication.
SALT (Stage Audio Lighting Team) have grown again and they have been learning quickly and enthusiastically, learning various skills in stage management and cable patching, mixing and equalising a well balanced live mix, lighting sequences and visual aspects to help keep our assemblies engaging and running smoothly. They’re proved themselves to be a capable team, running the Easter service with minimal teacher supervision which is showing great progress from the new members this term so far.
