Grade 4 Community News
Hello Grade 4 students and families,
Term 2 is well underway, and we are well and truly making strides in our learning. It has been fantastic to see students continue to demonstrate responsibility for their learning and show growth in their learning.
4B – Mr. Scott
Hello hello! I’m Mr Scott and I have been teaching here at Tarneit Rise for almost two years. I absolutely love being a part of the Tarneit Rise community and consider it a privilege to spend my days with such amazing students. I asked the students in 4B how they would describe me using one word or phrase. The responses ranged from “funny” to “writes too much”. I was even told that I need a pedicure… When I am not at school, I enjoy spending time with my friends and family, and obsessing over my greyhound Danny. I am thoroughly enjoying being with the Grade 4 community and seeing the growth that the students are making brings me tremendous joy. I look forward to seeing what amazing things we can achieve for the remainder of 2024!
Reading
Our unit on the impact of European settlement has now wrapped up, and we now look forward to a text study on ‘The Rabbits’ by John Marsden. Our learning on the impact of European settlement was meaningful and insightful. It allowed students to be exposed to a range of perspectives of European colonisation and we now have a clear idea of the factors that impacted First Nations Peoples due the arrival of Europeans in Australia.
Writing
In our Writing to Learn unit, the students have completed their unit on Historical Narratives. We finalised the unit by co-constructing a plan for a narrative using a range of writing techniques and language features. Students experimented with the use of personification, idioms, and hyperboles. We also explored how to increase reader engagement using specific nouns, adverbs and adjectives. We change things up for our next unit, where students will have the opportunity to explore their creative side and dive into the world of multimodal texts.
Syntax
This term, the students have learnt how to identify dependent and independent clauses and write complex sentences using subordinating conjunctions. We have continued to expand on this knowledge by learning to identify and correct run-on sentences in our writing.
Maths
Our short but sweet unit on Location and Symmetry has concluded, and we have now begun learning about Chance and Data. So far, students have been learning the language we use to describe the likelihood of events occurring. We have used a probability scale to compare the outcome of events using the terms impossible, unlikely, even or equal chance, likely and certain. We will move on to learning about the difference between dependent and independent events, as well as unpacking data displays and what information we can gather from these displays.
