Grade 1 Community News
Dear Grade 1 Families and Carers,
It has been glorious to see all of our students settled in after a few weeks back at school.
Let’s take a look at what we have been up to so far.
Reading:
The students have finished learning about the seven continents and should all be very proud of the knowledge they have gained about the world around them.
This week we have started our unit on Ancient Mesopotamia. Over the course of this unit, students will be making connections between how people lived long, long ago, and how they live today. We are looking forward to all of the interesting facts we will be discovering as we go.
Writing:
In Synthetic Phonics, we learnt that ‘ew’ and ‘ue’ say long /u/ and /oo/ sounds. We also learnt that ‘ou’ says /ou/ in the middle and sometimes at the beginning of a word. Whilst ‘ow’ says /ow/ at the end of a word, except when followed by l, n or d. Our latest heart words we have been learning include ‘school’ and ‘father’.
In Writing, we have started planning and drafting for our next Informative Writing Unit. During this unit students are taking facts from our reading lessons on Ancient Mesopotamia and will be presenting what we have learnt to our class later in the term. Please support your child to compare non-fiction and fiction texts at home.
Mathematics:
In Maths, we finished up our measurement unit. The students really enjoyed investigating the mass, capacity, and length of different objects both inside and outside of the classroom.
This week, we started our data unit. Students are enjoying choosing their own question, as well as gathering, interpreting, and analysing data to help make sense of their world.
Vocabulary and Morphology:
In Vocabulary, we have been learning tier 2 words from our serial text ‘The Enchanted Wood’ by Enid Blyton. The students love trying to use their vocabulary words such as ‘crammed’, ‘sob’ and ‘nuisance’ throughout the school day. In Morphology, we have been learning about the suffix ‘ing’ and when to use it.
Friendly Reminders:
- Please ensure your child is bringing their reading satchel to school with their student journal, so we can celebrate your child reading milestones.
- Please ensure your child is only bringing water to school. Students are allowed to bring cut up fruit in containers to eat during learning time.
- Lunch orders are available for students on Monday, Wednesday and Friday throughout the term and may be ordered through:
We thank you for your continued support of your child’s learning.
