Prep Community News

Hello Prep Families and Carers,

Our Prep students continue to make us proud on their arrival to school. The students unpack their bags and complete an independent task while the rest of their class arrives and gets settled in the morning. Here are the topics we will be covering over the next few weeks.

Reading

In Week 3, the students learned two new sounds, /l/ and /v/ as well as the heart word ‘are’. In Week 4, we learned the sounds /e/ and /r/ and the heart word ‘one’. We continue to practise our segmenting and blending skills to read words. For example “v-a-n”segmenting is the skill of saying each sound out loud and then slowly blending all of those sounds together to read the word.

Our Prep students have continued to learn about rhyming words by learning the nursery rhyme Jack and Jill. They have enjoyed thinking of chains of words that rhyme. For example, Jill, hill, bill, mill…

In Week 4, our Read to Learn topic has moved on to ‘stories’ We began the unit by listening to and answering questions about the story ‘Chicken Little’.

Writing

In writing, we have continued learning new sounds. We have now learned m, s, f, a, p, t, c, i, n, o, b, h, l, v, e and r. The students work hard every day to form these letters correctly.  In week 3, our new heart word was ‘are’ and in week 4 it was ‘one’. We practise by saying “a-r-e spells are” and “o-n-e spells one” and using it in a sentence.

The students continue to work hard on their 5- Star Writing. They have been writing sentences that link to our nursery rhyme and story topics in Reading. With lots of practise we will be experts at remembering to use a capital letter at the start and full stop at the end, as well as using our finger spaces, finger spelling and our best handwriting.

Here are some students working very hard in Prep C

Maths

In Maths we started the topic of Position and Movement. The students have had fun following and giving instructions using the language ‘on’ ‘in’ ‘under’ ‘between’ ‘next to’ ‘near’ ‘forwards’ and ‘towards’

Sip and Crunch

Sip and Crunch is a great way for your child to refuel on fresh fruit or vegetables during learning time. For Sip and Crunch, we ask that you add a small container of cut fruit or vegetables that is separate from your child’s lunchbox so that they can have it on their table to crunch on while learning. In addition, we also ask that you pack a bottle of water so that they can sip on this at their table during learning time.

Take Home Reading

At Tarneit Rise we have a take-home reading program. Each child will be given a day where they will change the books in their reading satchel or red prep bag with their teacher's assistance. The teacher will also be checking the journal so we can monitor how many nights of reading they have completed.

If you have any questions about this process, please speak to your child’s classroom teacher. They will be happy to help you.

Reminders

In term 2, parents/carers are asked to let their child walk into the pod by themselves to help build their independence. At the end of the day, children need to be collected from their classrooms by their parents/carers.

Please ensure all items of clothing are labelled. This helps us to get them back to you if they are misplaced.
