Grade 5 Community News
Dear year 5 families,
We are now well into some amazing learning in term 2 and are seeing some amazing work being produced by our awesome year 5 students.
Reading Reconsidered
Students are really enjoying our text for this term Inside Out and Back Again. In reading lessons, we have been using the text to prompt discussion on character decisions, author language choices and symbolism and in coming weeks we will look at topics such as character decisions, emotions and challenges.
Writing
This week in writing we will be looking at how different subordinating conjunctions the relationship between the independent and dependent clauses in sentences.
We will then use this knowledge to write engaging paragraphs related to Inside Out and Back Again and continue writing the complication of our historical narratives. In coming weeks, we will continue writing our historical narratives as well as learning about direct and indirect speech.
Vocabulary
This week in vocabulary, we are learning five new words linked to our serial text ‘Inside Out And Back Again.’
Vocabulary words for the week:
Shame, Surge, Defeated, Assertive, Compromise
Throughout the week the students will be analysing these words, breaking them into syllables, learning their meanings and completing activities with the end goal of using them within a sentence.
Mathematics
In Mathematics, the students have continued to learn a wider range of multiplication strategies such as the area model, vertical and expanded column multiplication. The students have used these methods for further problem solving and also created their own closed and open-ended multiplication worded problems for their peers to solve.
Economics
Over the past two weeks in Economics, the students have learnt about trade offs and opportunity costs when making purchases. They have also learnt about resourcing and the three different types including natural, capital and human. It has been wonderful to hear the student opinions and interest in this unit of work.
Reminders
- Just a reminder that it is an expectation that all students are reading regularly throughout the week and recording this in their journals.
