Grade 2 Report

This term the Grade Two children have been focusing on ‘Past and Present’ as part of their History Unit. The students have been comparing present day family life, technology, toys, and our school community to the past and exploring how these have changed over time.

To understand and explore this topic in more detail the children went on an excursion to Bundoora Park. There they were given the opportunity to visit Cooper’s Settlement, where they experienced life as it would have been back in the ‘olden days’.

They were taught a lesson in an old world classroom, where they learnt the rules of the classroom. They also had the opportunity to write numbers and the alphabet with an ink quill pen.

The students also visited an old house, where they took part in household chores children in the past were expected to complete every morning and after school. These chores included churning the butter and washing the clothes on a washboard in a water bucket.

They also played old games such as skittles, hopscotch, ring toss and throwing the boot.

Students got to witness a  150 year old printing press being used, and were able to print their own initials using ink and letter stamps. They also had the opportunity to ride in an electric vehicle around the Heritage Farm. The students  got to see kangaroos, emus and ducks, and experience what the landscape used to look like 200 years ago.

Our ‘Treasures Through Time’ class book has also been a hit. The children have enjoyed taking the book home. It has come back to school filled with many wonderful entries that students have been excited to share with their classmates. We have loved hearing the children share these treasures and their family significance.

So far the children have enjoyed learning about the past!
