Learning and Teaching

STEM -  Spheros

This term in STEM, we are learning about block programming. Block programming is a simpler way to program than using normal programming languages, like HTML or javascript.

Last week, we started to familiarise ourselves with the Spheros and learn about some of its functions. The students were challenged to use their newly acquired skills to complete set tasks, like weaving in and out of coloured circles. They were very successful at this.

This week, we focused on programming elements such as: speed, duration and heading(direction). The students had to write a simple program to tell their Sphero to make a square shape. Then they  added their own modifications like changing colour at different points and have spoken responses at the beginning and end of the program.

Rocket Maths

Our school has purchased a subscription to use the Rocket Math Online Tutor to assist in the development of automatic recall of numbers facts (automaticity). Students from Year 1 to Year 6 have been given a Username and our Account Number to access the program. They will be familiar with how to play it as we are using during our Maths session.

For your child to gain the most benefit from the Online Tutor, it is important that they play it at home as well as at school. Your child can login through any device that uses a browser such as a laptop, tablet or phone. Free apps are available for mobile devices. There have been issues with playing the game in Safari on IPads and it is recommended that you download the free app. Earphones are important so your child can hear corrections as well as sound effects and congratulations.

The Rocket Math Online Tutor keeps track of your child’s progress wherever he or she works, whether at home or at school. A practice session will only last 10 minutes and then they will be logged out for an hour. We recommend that you ask your child to show you this session completed screen, so you can know they finished their homework and congratulate them.

This program, along with other approaches at school, will help develop your child’s automaticity by using research based principles in its delivery. This automaticity helps develop self esteem and confidence (self efficacy) in Maths and frees up the working memory to focus on more complex parts of problems.

For some students, being able to recall the number facts will be easier and for others it will require further practice. Through the continual use of the Online Tutor students will be able to see how effort can be transferred into achievement.

When students have completed a level (Learning Track), they will be awarded a certificate to recognise their achievement. We will also be awarded certificates for participation over each two week period. Both certificates will be awarded at our fortnightly assemblies. With a special prize given to one of the students that has been able to achieve 4 stars (16 sessions = 8 sessions at school and 8 at home over a two week period).

I am excited to see how far each student can grow in their automaticity over the year!

Here is a video that gives you a short explanation as well. Be a hero with Rocket Math`
