Yarning Competition
If you are an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander student, the 2026 Yarning Competition is your chance to be heard!
WHAT IS THE YARNING COMPETITION?
The Yarning Competition – Sharing Stories, Celebrating Culture, 2026 is a national storytelling and creative arts competition created by the Department of the House of Representatives. It gives Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander secondary school students (Years 7–12) the chance to share their perspectives with the Australian Parliament.
HOW TO PARTICIPATE?
Students can express their stories through:
- Visual art (e.g., painting or drawing)
- Written work (up to 400 words)
- Photography (up to 10 images)
- Video or audio (2–4 minutes)
You choose one of the competition's themes, such as Country and Connection; Identity and Culture; Family and Community; or Reconciliation to guide your creative piece.
PRIZES AND KEY DATE
Entries must be submitted online by 11 May 2026 and are open to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students across Australia enrolled in secondary school.
- Three winners from each year group will receive an expenses-paid trip to Canberra, including flights and accommodation to visit Parliament House.
- Your work may be exhibited at Parliament House and displayed on the national Yarning website.
- You will also attend official events, meet Members of Parliament and connect with other young creatives.

Young ICT Explorers
Express your creativity and solve real-world problems using technology! Registrations for 2026 are now open.
WHAT IS IT?
The Young ICT Explorers (YICTE) non-profit competition encourages you to use your imagination and explore how technology can address challenges and improve lives.
From developing better recycling solutions to supporting people with disabilities, creating virtual reality worlds, or designing advanced robots and operating systems, your project will be judged on four criteria:
- Creativity and innovation
- Project difficulty
- Quality and completeness
- Presentation and documentation
HOW DO I REGISTER?
Ask a teacher or parent to submit an Expression of Interest and create a User Account on your behalf.
Your project must include a report outlining
- what was created,
- why it was created, and
- the technologies used.
