The Power of Collaboration

Some of the most important work in the Junior School happens beyond the classroom, through the professional conversations, planning, and collaborative decision-making that shape teaching and learning every day.

Our learners bring different strengths, experiences, and challenges to the classroom. Responding effectively to these differences requires teachers to continually reflect, share expertise, and work together to plan purposeful next steps in learning. Through analysing student work, reviewing assessment data, and discussing classroom observations, teachers develop a clearer understanding of what students know, where challenges may exist, and how teaching can best support their progress.

These professional conversations help ensure teaching is intentional, responsive, and informed by evidence. For our learners, this means classroom experiences are shaped by a genuine understanding of their needs, strengths, and areas for growth. Behind every effective lesson is thoughtful planning, and behind strong planning is meaningful collaboration.

When teachers work together with a shared focus on student learning, they create stronger pathways for growth, support, and success, ensuring every learner is known, supported, and challenged.

As part of their cross-curricular inquiry unit, “Animals Live in Environments That Meet Their Needs,” Year 1 students have been exploring different animals and the habitats they call home during Mandarin lessons. To extend their learning beyond the classroom, all Year 1 students enjoyed an exciting excursion to Werribee Open Range Zoo on Tuesday, 5th May.

Throughout the day, students took part in a range of interactive and educational experiences that helped them better understand how animals survive and thrive in different environments. During the engaging Habitat and Features workshop, students discovered ways people can help protect animal habitats and learned about the important role conservation plays in caring for wildlife.

A major highlight of the excursion was the safari bus adventure, where students had the opportunity to observe magnificent African animals roaming across the open plains. They were excited to spot zebras, antelope, rhinos, and giraffes while learning about the unique features that help each animal adapt to its environment.

Students also explored the elephant precinct, including the Waterhole and Elephant Trail. They were fascinated by the thoughtfully designed habitat and enjoyed observing the elephants as they moved through the space, interacted with one another, and cooled off in the water. The experience sparked many thoughtful discussions about the needs of animals and how zoos support their wellbeing.

The excursion was a fantastic opportunity for students to connect their classroom learning with real-world experiences. It was a day filled with curiosity, discovery, and memorable encounters with wildlife.
