Auslan

Grade 1 and 2

In week 3, grade 1 and 2 students will continue to develop their fingerspelling skills, practising how to recognise and spell simple words using the Auslan alphabet. They will also continue to explore handshapes in Auslan, and learn and practice the next lines in the Australian national anthem.

Grade 3 and 4

This week, students will explore how space is used in Auslan to show meaning. We will learn that signers can place people and objects in different locations in the signing space to show who is involved and what is happening. Students will practice setting up simple scenes and using pointing to refer back to these locations. Through conversations and role play, we will develop our ability to follow and create signed messages using space to make meaning clear.

Grade 5 and 6

In week 3 ,we will explore how meaning in Auslan can be shown visually using depicting signs, space and movement. Students will learn to recognise the difference between showing and signing, and will be introduced to different types of depicting signs, including SASS (size and shape specifiers), handling and entity signs. Through practical activities, we will practice using these features to show actions and movement, and to place people and objects in space to make meaning clearer.

OPEN ART ROOM this Friday morning!

During our Mother’s Day morning this Friday May 8th, parents and students are invited into the Artroom to view the amazing artwork created by all students during Term One. The 2D and 3D work displayed is inspired by Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama – full of dots, pumpkins, mushrooms and colour! Each student has contributed two or more artworks for you to view.

In the classroom this week…

Prep students will be looking at the native bogong moth and its links to Indigenous Australians. They will use paper bark to create a body and mark patterns with symmetry and earth tones.

Grade 1/2 students will create monoprints using the gelli printing technique. They will use scraping techniques, negative space and image transfers to create unique, textured and layered prints.

With autumn in full swing, Grade 3/4 students will be printing with leaves and drawing contour lines around the shapes using different coloured paint pens.

Grade 5 students will finish their 3D mushrooms by adding paint pen details to the cap focussing on contrasting colours and mandala designs inspired by Yayoi Kusama.

Performing Arts

In the classroom...

Prep

Students will be exploring First Nations music through listening, singing and movement. They will be introduced to a range of First Nations instruments and the sounds they create, while also beginning to learn simple songs that include First Nations language.

Grade 1

Students will continue exploring how pitch moves in music through high and low sounds. They will use pitch maps to show how melodies move up and down, helping them connect what they hear with what they see and perform.

Grade 2

Students will explore the timing relationship between quavers, crotchets and minims  in music. They will build this understanding through singing rounds, composing their own movements, and creating simple song ideas.

Grade 3/4

Students will continue learning how to read pitch on the treble clef. They will practise identifying where notes sit on the staff and use this knowledge to build their confidence when reading music.

Grade 5/6

Students will revise how to read music on the treble clef and apply this knowledge to tuned percussion instruments. They will practise reading notes and using them to play simple melodies.
