Why Habits Matter So Much

At Trafalgar Primary School, we place a strong focus on routines and habits because they are the foundation of a calm and successful classroom.

When students first learn a routine; such as entering the classroom, listening to instructions, or transitioning between activities, it requires effort and attention. However, with practice, these actions become habits. Once something becomes a habit, students no longer need to think hard about what to do. They can do it automatically.

This is important because it frees up students’ thinking for learning. Instead of working out what is expected, students can focus on reading, writing, problem-solving, and engaging in lessons.

Strong habits also create a sense of calm and predictability. When classrooms run in a consistent and orderly way, students feel more settled and confident. They know what is coming next and what is expected of them. This is particularly helpful for students who find school more challenging, as it reduces uncertainty and helps them feel safe and supported.

Our approach is informed by the work of Running the Room by Tom Bennett, which highlights that culture in a classroom is built through small, repeated actions. Calm entries, quiet listening, and smooth transitions may seem simple, but they are powerful.

When done well, they create the conditions where learning can flow without interruption.

Over time, these routines become part of how our school operates every day. When habits are strong, classrooms feel calmer, learning time is protected, and students are better able to succeed.

By focusing on habits, we are helping students build the skills they need not just for school, but for life including the ability to focus, follow through, and take part positively in a community.

Sincerely,

Cameron Nicholls
