Faith in Action

As a Lutheran school, Good News, as part of the mission of the Lutheran Church, is a community of worship and service, sharing and living the good news of Jesus Christ.

This is a noticeable difference between the way of being at Good News and that of other local schools. Our students have daily opportunities to hear the gospel, learn more about it and make decisions based on its teaching.

Children are encouraged to act because of their learning. Whether that is through participation, advocacy, social justice, social entrepreneurship or lifestyle choices.

This is a mindset that is instilled in our students and grows as they become adventurous and courageous learners.

Year 1 Inquiry: Exploring How Life Changes Over Time

This term, Year 1 students launched their new Unit of Inquiry under the transdisciplinary theme Where We Are in Place and Time. To begin our journey into the concept of change, students rotated through olden-day games and school activities, followed by a gallery walk comparing past and present images.

Students are now preparing to interview an elder to learn firsthand about life in the past and how family heritage can shape who we are today. This meaningful connection to community reflects our Faith in Action, as students show respect, empathy, and gratitude for the wisdom of others—living out Christian values in real and relational ways.

Throughout the provocation, students demonstrated PYP Learner Profile attributes such as being inquirers, open-minded, and caring, laying a strong foundation for deeper learning and reflection.

GATEWays Sparks Mathematical Curiosity

The GATEWays program offered both Year 6 and Year 8 students an exciting opportunity to explore advanced mathematical concepts through real-world, hands-on learning on Friday 13 June. Students were selected for the program based on their PAT results, NAPLAN results, and in-class assessments.

Year 6 students were challenged with complex and engaging tasks that deepened their understanding of the Pythagorean Theorem and Euler’s Theory, including Euler circuits and Euler paths.

Year 8 students tackled topics typically introduced in senior levels. In the first session, they explored Matrices, a concept usually taught in VCE Mathematics. The second session focused on coordinate geometry, where students applied linear and quadratic equations to problem-solving scenarios.

Both year levels embraced the challenge, developing stronger analytical skills and a greater appreciation for mathematics as a powerful tool for understanding the world.

Premiers' Reading Challenge

The Premiers’ Reading Challenge is in full swing, with 35 students already completing the challenge — congratulations! Your thoughtful book reviews and love of reading are inspiring others to join in.Families can find helpful resources on the PRC website, including tips for Creating a Literacy-Rich Home. Here are a few simple ideas:

  • Set up a cosy reading space
  • Keep books easily accessible
  • Encourage family reading time
  • Talk about books together
  • Model reading at home

Everyday moments at home can build your child’s confidence and love of learning. A big thank you to families for supporting your children on this reading journey — your encouragement makes a real difference.
