Topic: A Favourite Family Board Game

As we finish school on Thursday, everyone is invited to bring in their favourite family board game on Wednesday. We’ll spend some time playing them together during the day!

♥️ Heart Words

In your child’s book pocket this week, you’ll find a red booklet with the Heart Words we’ve been learning so far. We encourage you to read through these words with your child, paying special attention to the ‘heart parts’ - the tricky bits that need to be remembered by heart.

Please keep this booklet in your child’s book pocket, as we’ll continue adding new words to it throughout the year.

TODAY: Specialist timetable

It’s Planning Week for Term 3, so students will have all of their specialist classes today (Monday). While we will be onsite, we will be busy planning for a wonderful term of learning ahead!

CURRICULUM

📚 Phonemic awareness: reading and phonics

We are learning about our FINAL letter of the alphabet - Z! (as in zip). Students will explore the phoneme (the sound it makes), the grapheme (how it is written with correct formation) and the matching cued articulation action.

In addition, students will practise reading and writing CVC and CVCC/CCVC words using all the short vowels.

We’ll also review our Heart Words: are, was, you, what and have.

Holiday Reading Ideas

-Enjoy reading together daily. This could be bedtime stories, picture books or comics  anything your child enjoys!

-Encourage your child to read their decodable passages or CVC words from their book pocket if you have them at home.

-Play word games like ‘I Spy’ with beginning sounds or spotting Heart Words in signs, menus or labels when out and about.

-Revisit the Heart Words booklet and practise reading and spelling the words.

-You could also work through any UFLI home practice pages you that we have uploaded in previous Wonga Weeklies.

📝 Literature: reading responses and writing

Our Mentor Text this week is Molly's Jolly Brolly by Erica Jane Waters. We’ve chosen this story because it’s set in winter - the perfect lead-up to our own winter break!

Students will imagine an adventure they might have with their magical umbrella, then draw and write about it. To finish off, they’ll create a fun umbrella craft to go with their writing.

In Writing, we will focus on practising the correct formation of the letter Z while revising all the letters we’ve introduced throughout the year - we now know how to write every upper and lower case letter!

Holiday Writing Ideas

-Draw a picture about holiday adventures and then write a simple sentence to match the picture. E.g. “I can see a big dog.”

-Help your child sound out simple words as they write, reminding them to leave finger spaces between words.

-Play with fine motor activities like Lego, playdough, cutting, threading and drawing.

-Practise letter formation by writing with chalk outside, using sticks in sand or tracing letters with a finger in the air.

-Revisit the letters and sounds we’ve learned so far (they know them all now!) by spotting them in books or signs.

🔢  Maths

We are continuing to build and deepen our understanding of numbers to 20. This week, we’ll be focusing on finding ‘one more’ and ‘one less’, sequencing numbers to 20, and comparing and ordering both numbers and collections up to 20.

Holiday Maths Fun

-Counting while on the go! Practise counting forwards and backwards to 20 during walks or car rides.

-Play number games like “Guess my number” with numbers between 0 and 20.

-Play board games that involve rolling dice and counting spaces.

-Write numbers in fun ways like writing numbers to 20 with chalk on the driveway, on a big piece of paper or try tracing numbers in sand.

-Spot numbers in the world around you, like numbers on letterboxes, signs or clocks. Ask questions like “How many numbers do you see?” or “What number comes after 7?”
