Classroom Reports

Foundation

This week in Inquiry, our young scientists explored how bird beaks are specially shaped for the types of food birds eat. The children were fascinated as they used tools like tongs, tweezers, and pliers to test which “beak” worked best for cracking seeds or picking up small insects and creatures. It was a hands-on and engaging way to learn about animal adaptations! We also had the opportunity to get creative and make our own birds out of playdough, focusing on the shape of the beak and what that bird might eat.

In Literacy, we’ve started to explore information books and how they are different from stories (narratives). The children are learning how these books help us find facts and answer questions about the world around us. We’re excited to continue this journey and work towards creating our very own information books in the coming weeks!

Year 3/4 A

Throughout the last few weeks, 3/4A have experienced various topics across our subjects.

In Literacy, we have started to understand the structure of information reports. Students are doing a fantastic job at recognising these!

Throughout Maths, we have experienced the relationship between multiplication and division, as well as working with angles.

For Inquiry, we have been busy learning civics and citizenship! Examples of this include understanding the levels of government and our own sense of belonging.

Everyone is doing a terrific job at logging their minutes for our reading marathon, keep up the great work!

Year 5/6

We have been lucky in 5/6 and have had a special guest teach us how to use the iPad app, Book Creator. Alli, with the assistance of Ariah, taught us all the steps to using the app as a different way of showing our learning.

To celebrate World Ocean day, we worked with grade 1/2 A to create our own Ocean artworks. It was great to see the leadership and creativity of all students involved.

Our seven Somers camp students arrive back this week, we look forward to hearing about their great experiences.

Well done to all students who have been reading, all minutes are added to the tally for the Reading Marathon. Keep up the great work!

Year 9 Careers Week

What a busy week for the Year 9's. Thanks to Mrs Woodman, Robyn and our Homeroom teachers, Miss Piccoli and Miss Emily we were able to spend three of our four day week out of the classroom, training for our future careers. On the Monday, we spent the day down at Donaldson Park, first with the lovely people from NCLLEN who provided us with VR headsets, which provided insight into a range of jobs. It was helpful and fun, even if we all laughed at each other when we had the headsets on.

After they left, we all had recess and ran around outside. When we came back inside, Mrs Woodman gave us a lesson on writing resumes and job interviews. I, personally, was surprised at how easy it was, and the lesson took away some stress.

Then, after lunch, thanks to Kylie for providing food for us and the VM students delivering it, we went back into the main building to learn from various organisations about potential options for not just jobs but also work experience next year at our first ever school-based Career Expo. All in all, it was a perfect way to start off the week.

Tuesday, we headed off in the bus and car down to Bendigo where we spent the morning taking a tour of Bendigo Foodshare, learning about jobs, volunteer and work experience options that they provide. The work they do there, and throughout the area is inspirational and important for everyone.

Then, after a quick lunch at the lake we went across to Thales. Thales is a worldwide organisation probably best known in Australia for their work providing Bushmasters to Ukraine for the Russia-Ukraine war. We got a tour and got to see some of their vehicles up close, even getting inside a Bushmaster! It was really fun, and I think opened the eyes of many of us.

The final day was spent at the two TAFE campuses. In the morning, we went to their Bendigo city campus, touring courses like health, cookery and beauty. Then in the afternoon we went out to the Charleston Rd campus and learnt about the more trades-based option like plumbing, architecture, automotive and painting and decorating. I think it showed that there more than one pathway to get where you want, and TAFE has a lot of options to do so.

Overall, it was a really fun week and I think it showed us a lot of options for our futures.

Year 11

It’s Been a Big Two Weeks!

It’s been a busy and productive couple of weeks at school! Our Year 11 students have been putting in a huge effort as they wrap up their Unit 1 and Unit 3 classes, completing SACs, assignments, and revising for upcoming assessments. With Unit 1 Exams starting on Monday, June 16th and many students sitting the GAT on Tuesday, June 17th, there’s been a strong academic focus throughout the year level. We’re proud of the dedication and commitment students have shown—keep up the great work!

There’s been plenty of excitement beyond the classroom as well. The new basketball and netball courts are close to completion and already looking amazing. Steel Stadium is nearly ready for use, and we’re also looking forward to moving into our new school buildings, which will provide much-needed space and modernised classrooms. It's a very exciting time for our school community!

In addition, preparations are well underway for the 160 Year Celebration of Education in Wedderburn. Don’t forget to check out the newsletter and Facebook page over the new few weeks for more details.

A big congratulations to Jade, who has qualified to compete at State Level Cross Country—an amazing effort! Best of luck!!

Also, a reminder to keep logging those reading minutes for the Reading Olympics—we’ve had a great start, so let’s keep the momentum going!

Mr G’s Study Tip: “Start with what you know—it builds confidence. Then focus on the harder stuff in short, focused bursts. A well-organised study routine (with breaks!) goes a long way.”

Well done on a great two weeks, and good luck as we head into exams and the GAT. You’ve got this!
